Description: Our flagship location opened its doors on First Avenue in 1984 and was bestowed with a glowing, two-star review from The New York Times. From the moment you arrive, old world charm permeates your dining experience through authentic Mexican colors and rustic folk art. Traditional amate gods greet you at the front entrance and brightly colored papel picado hangs from the ceiling. Corn tortillas are made on site and an exposition grill further seduces your senses. With its warm ambiance and outstanding cuisine, this Rosa Mexicano location has remained a perennial New York favorite for over 20 years.

Yes, the guacamole really is that good. This is upscale Mexican food--i.e., most of the entrees don't end in the letter "O"--that tasted so good my wife and I didn't mind the 20-minute walk from our hotel. (The location is really the only drawback.) The ambience was nice (dark, romantic), the service excellent and the prices better than I expected--we even had enough left over to splurge for a bottle of wine, which was an unexpected surprise. We'd heard this was one of the best Mexican restaurants in NYC and I didn't experience anything that would contradict that notion. Just bring an appetite for the guac and a good pair of walking shoes.

I went in with low expectations, thinking "How good can Mexican food be?". Answer :VERY GOOD!! The meal was superb. the dishes were flawless, the margarita was perfect. And the prices were very reasonable, which for NY is quite a challenge. Desert was a classic ( flan) and I left very happy....and full! Definitely a repeat.

Ate here again on a recent trip and were not disappointed.

Delicious margaritas slipped down well as did the Sangria.

The home made guacamole is superb - made to your level of spiciness at the table and served with fresh chips and tortillas.

We ordered from the grill - had amazing - and huge - pork chops - my partner went for the chicken which was all very well cooked - have never managed to get to dessert in this place - always too full! Everything I have ever had was lovely - and reasonably priced for the quality and quantity - especially in NYC.

We went midweek so was quieter but very busy with regulars at weekends so best to book. Plenty of tables for different size parties - so suited to couples or bigger groups.
