These folks are a victim of their own success. On a Saturday morning, the line was out of the store and down the street. The service is fast and the food is excellent. The location is not nearly large enough for the volume being done but no one seems to mind. I would highly recommend that this stop be on anyone's NY itinerary.

This place should be your lunch sorted every day whilst in manhatten. Its a very authentic place with an incredible range of bagels and fillings. Ive never seen it not busy with locals. It reminds me of the soup nazi episode of seinfeld

I say that because sometimes (scratch that), because ALL the time, when a place generates this much hype and gains momentum, it can ride it all the way to legends-ville.

True, that is the case with Ess-a-bagel - but its also true that it got there because they do some of the most decadently scrumptious bagels known to man kind.

Here you are stuck in front of their counter desperately trying to figure out whether you want an egg or an everything bagel but ultimately you say screw it, ask for a baker's dozen, and take one of each type of bagel. They are all incredibly soft and bursting with taste. Toast 'em or eat them dry with some cream cheese or salt beef and mayo your call - but you don't do it here. At this place you buy your bagel and then go next door and buy your filling - because they are not about the frills, they are about making incredibly tasty and soft bagels that will last for days.

On a recently trip to NYC I bought a baker's dozen thinking it will last me a week - hardly lasted 2 days. You find yourself having them for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Highly recommended place - also, try out their bialys, surprisingly tasty too. Is there no baking that this place can't concur?!

Tip: try to get here early in the morning as they bake them - the smell will incite (and stay with you for days), but also you will get the bagels fresh as they come out!

My all time favorite bagel. I have tried others in many cities, including NYC. But this is the best! I always bring some back home with me after. Pumpernickel or everything with lox!!! My friend's said the whole wheat everything as the best they had.
