My friend and I booked a last minute trip to New York. We usually stay at Berkshire Place or The Benjamin, in a suite, but neither hotel was available, so based on recommendations from hotel.com (which Delta connected us to), and the high ranking on Tripadvisor, we chose The San Carlos Hotel. It is in the same block as The Benjamin and The Waldorf Towers, a couple of blocks down 50th from Saks, and a straight route to Rockefeller Center, if you need to get your bearings. Hotels.com had a good rate, but the San Carlos website had an even better non-refundable rate.
We arrived at 9.30 am, checked our bags and were shown to the breakfast room for a complimentary breakfast. Our room was great...a king executive suite on the 9th floor. It was one very large room, with a kitchen (true coffeepot, microwave, refrigerator, etc) and dining alcove and a sofa bed. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the room was very large and quiet. We never once waited in line at the desk or for our bags and when we requested something for our room, it arrived instantaneously. One plus or minus is that there was no hassle waiting on assistance getting our bags to our room..we had carry-ons and took them ourselves. The hotel is pretty casual in that way, but leaves out no necessities and handles everything expeditiously.
The business center never had a wait for the computers, and thre is no charge for printing or use of the computers.
Breakfast was a little hectic, but it was nice to have yogurt, toast, pastries, juice, etc. without leaving the hotel.
One of my favorite restaurants, Mint, is next door and owned by the hotel. Mint is a fabulous Indian restaurant with great ambience. Also, on the food topic, just around the corner is Pax, where you can get perfect salads and other items for your room.
When I checked out, the manager brought the owner out to meet me, and if I had not already planned to write a rave review, I would have after meeting him. He is extremely personable and wants to be sure that his guests intend to return.
We took the hotel car to the airport for about $10 more than a cab and it was perfect...quiet, clean, on time, and hassle free.
I do not believe there is any room service, but there are enough good choices for dining out or for bringing gourmet foods back to your own kitchen. All in all, a hassle free, lovely experience.
