San Carlos Hotel
Ranked #50 of 470 Hotels in New York City
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 26, 2010

My friend and I booked a last minute trip to New York. We usually stay at Berkshire Place or The Benjamin, in a suite, but neither hotel was available, so based on recommendations from hotel.com (which Delta connected us to), and the high ranking on Tripadvisor, we chose The San Carlos Hotel. It is in the same block as The Benjamin and The Waldorf Towers, a couple of blocks down 50th from Saks, and a straight route to Rockefeller Center, if you need to get your bearings. Hotels.com had a good rate, but the San Carlos website had an even better non-refundable rate.
We arrived at 9.30 am, checked our bags and were shown to the breakfast room for a complimentary breakfast. Our room was great...a king executive suite on the 9th floor. It was one very large room, with a kitchen (true coffeepot, microwave, refrigerator, etc) and dining alcove and a sofa bed. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the room was very large and quiet. We never once waited in line at the desk or for our bags and when we requested something for our room, it arrived instantaneously. One plus or minus is that there was no hassle waiting on assistance getting our bags to our room..we had carry-ons and took them ourselves. The hotel is pretty casual in that way, but leaves out no necessities and handles everything expeditiously.
The business center never had a wait for the computers, and thre is no charge for printing or use of the computers.
Breakfast was a little hectic, but it was nice to have yogurt, toast, pastries, juice, etc. without leaving the hotel.
One of my favorite restaurants, Mint, is next door and owned by the hotel. Mint is a fabulous Indian restaurant with great ambience. Also, on the food topic, just around the corner is Pax, where you can get perfect salads and other items for your room.
When I checked out, the manager brought the owner out to meet me, and if I had not already planned to write a rave review, I would have after meeting him. He is extremely personable and wants to be sure that his guests intend to return.
We took the hotel car to the airport for about $10 more than a cab and it was perfect...quiet, clean, on time, and hassle free.
I do not believe there is any room service, but there are enough good choices for dining out or for bringing gourmet foods back to your own kitchen. All in all, a hassle free, lovely experience.

We stayed with our kids (12 and 17) in a Deluxe Room w/2 queens. No bed bugs!! Room was very clean, roomy, with small fridge, micro wave, tv (never used, too busy walking) and free wi-fi for our four ipods and laptop. Easy access if you're driving and secure parking garage is just before hotel, don't forget to ask front desk for discount voucher if you self park (Bobby actually stopped traffic allowing me to reverse back to parking garage, classic!!). Free continental breakfast includes coffee tea juice, some fruit and yogurt and breads you can toast and also croissants. Access to Subway lines 6, E and M are one block away. Rockfeller Ctr and Central Park are 10-15 minutes away on foot.

Perfect.

I have stayed in at least 20 different hotels in New York over the past 20 years and the San Carlos Hotel clearly stands out as one of the best. It is located in midtown near the popular attractions but just far enough away to keep the crowds and street noise to a minimum. The 2Queen bedroom suite at 600 sq ft is massive compared to most Manhattan hotels, and the best I have experienced in NY. The staff was friendly and helpful, and there was no wait to check in, check out, or get bell service. The continental breakfast was adequate, and represented the first time in my memory that I had a breakfast included in the price in a NY hotel. The cost of the room was substantially lower than what many of the popular NY hotels charge for a room half the size. There is nothing about the San Carlos that I can complain about and I would recommend it highly.

"Great location and very friendly staff. Located half a block from Lexinton & 51st Subway and Waldorf Astoria. Close to Rockefeller Centre, Radio City Music Hall and Sachs 5th Avenue for those who can afford to shop there as well as some superb restaurants.

Thanks to Fabio, Gabriel and Bobby who were most friendly and helpful and went out of their way to ensure we had a memorable stay.. Even let us store a bag at the hotel while we visited friends in Upstate New York for 4 days. Thanks also to Roberto from the limo company that the hotel arranged to take us to the Airport.

My friend and I stayed here during the first week of the US Open. Fantastic stay!! Wonderful clean comfortable rooms. The staff was incredible, ready to answer any questions we had. Great location for restaurants (Ashtons is great) , spa (Bliss) is right around the corner, and an easy walk to the subway (8 blocks away) to catch the 7 train straight to the Open. Staff was so considerate, we missed breakfast one day and they re-opened the dining room just for us. Could not have been more helpful! Again, I'll never stay anywhere but the San Carlos...I've found my home away from home.

Have you priced hotels in midtown lately? A queen suite with a kitchenette at this price and this location? What a deal! We booked via the hotel's website and got a special rate for the Labor Day holiday when most other hotels in the area were booked up. The taxi ride from LaGuardia was about $40 on the weekday and about $30 on the weekend. Check in was no problem and staff was pleasant. There is no concierge. The room was very nice with a sitting area with desk, flat screen TV, couch, & two chairs. The kitchenette has a sink, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker. A small table with two chairs is there also. The room was spotless and in great repair. The walls are cement so there is virtually no noise from adjoining rooms. The bedroom had another TV and a pants press. There are two closets in the room. The bathroom was modern with Aveda products. The hotel was super quiet and we slept great on the comfortable bed. I'm an early riser so it was nice to sit in the sitting area, watch TV, and have a coffee while my wife slept. The breakfast is a typical hotel breakfast; coffee, juice, yogurt, pastries, bagels, etc. If you want more there is a small restaurant right across the street. The hotel is an easy walk to Times Square, Bloomingdales, Rockefeller Center, Saks, and a host of other shopping and dining options. We had dinner one night in the adjoining restaurant - Mint (an Indian restaurant) - it was disappointing to say the least. There is no room service in the hotel. It's on a quiet street so it was relaxing to come back to this little gem after a day of being in the city.
