Description: Nestled in New York City's Upper West Side, Levain headquarters is a cozy neighborhood bakery where locals are greeted by name. A steady stream of loyal regulars stand side by side with tourists, eager to sample the legendary baked goods. From an inventive array of rustic breads to the world-famous six-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookie, everything is baked on-site, fresh every day from the finest natural ingredients. What doesn't sell that day goes to help feed the hungry-a mission that has been solidly in place since the beginning. The bakery was founded in 1994 by friends Connie McDonald and Pam Weekes. At the time, Connie was in banking and Pam in Fashion. The two, both competitive swimmers, trained together for the Ironman and-not surprisingly, as their tireless workouts left them feeling starved for great food- they began a passionate dialog about creating the world's greatest chocolate chip cookie. Within just a few years, Levain Bakery had become a neighborhood institution and a destination for epicurious travelers from around the world. Demand continued to grow. In 2000, to satisfy their regular clientele summering in the Hamptons, the two opened a second bakery in the village of Wainscott on Long Island's East End. And today, through their website, they now ship their world-famous cookies to happy fans around the globe.

“Levain In The Membrane”
Reviewed June 11, 2014

The premises are smaller than your house, but the reputation is as big as the planet: and there’s a reason for this. The Levain Bakery bakes bread, pastries and cakes, but it’s most famous for its cookies – and rightly so.

Despite how small it is – there’s no seating, full stop – the address is easy to find, but if you’re struggling with that, just look for the door outside which there is a lengthy queue of excitable people, awaiting their fix. Don’t be discouraged – the queue moves quickly, and waiting in line only heightens the anticipation, as the smell of the goodies wafts through the air.

Regardless of whether you are one of the indecisive people, or whether you know exactly what you want, it won’t matter because the good people at the Levain Bakery only offer about 4 types from which to pick: Chocolate Chip Walnut, Oatmeal Raisin, Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip. Even if that decision is too much responsibility, you can solve the problem by buying one of each, two of each, or just tip your wallet upside down and say: “give me as many cookies as I can afford”. I bought 6 (coincidentally because that’s all I had cash for), and immediately ran outside, sat down on the kerb, and proceeded to bury my face in cookie goodness.

Well, I’ve had a lot of cookies in my time – everything from those you can get in the supermarket, through to those that have been made from scratch by some very talented bakers – but I can assure you that none of them have come close to the Levain Bakery’s endeavours. I got mine almost straight from the oven – the right balance of crunch and gooeyness, perfectly baked, generous in size and so perfect in taste that you might even consider travelling (as I did) 3,000 miles just to get your hands on some. They were incredible, they were stunning, and they were the best cookies I’ve ever had in my 32 years.

Oh, and they’re lovely people too!

If you’re in town, you simply can’t miss out on this place.

Had the great luck to be visiting friends who live right by this place - so could visit early in the day and escape the queues! Delicious cookies that taste perfectly handmade, with melty chocolate fresh from the oven. Huge for $4!
