Description: Nestled in New York City's Upper West Side, Levain headquarters is a cozy neighborhood bakery where locals are greeted by name. A steady stream of loyal regulars stand side by side with tourists, eager to sample the legendary baked goods. From an inventive array of rustic breads to the world-famous six-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookie, everything is baked on-site, fresh every day from the finest natural ingredients. What doesn't sell that day goes to help feed the hungry-a mission that has been solidly in place since the beginning. The bakery was founded in 1994 by friends Connie McDonald and Pam Weekes. At the time, Connie was in banking and Pam in Fashion. The two, both competitive swimmers, trained together for the Ironman and-not surprisingly, as their tireless workouts left them feeling starved for great food- they began a passionate dialog about creating the world's greatest chocolate chip cookie. Within just a few years, Levain Bakery had become a neighborhood institution and a destination for epicurious travelers from around the world. Demand continued to grow. In 2000, to satisfy their regular clientele summering in the Hamptons, the two opened a second bakery in the village of Wainscott on Long Island's East End. And today, through their website, they now ship their world-famous cookies to happy fans around the globe.

Not much else to say really, the cookies always have been amazing and continue to be so. It would not make sense to go to New York and not go to Levains.

“Not Really Up to Raves”
Reviewed February 21, 2014

Levain is not really on the route we take in NYC but I felt the detour was worth it on our latest trip to the City to see what all the talk was about.

Yes, the cookies are big. Yes, they taste good and yes, they're crunchy outside and soft inside.

Sorry Levain lovers, now that I've eexperienced them, I will just say I can make three dozen cookies equally as good at my home for $4. I can also add $50 to that $4 and eat steak in a very nice Steak House.

“Best Cookies ever....”
Reviewed February 21, 2014

I read about this place in the paper at home, a reporter saying it was well worth the trip. I therefore planned it in as part of our time in Central Park. Yes, it is out of the way on the upper west side, but tbh it was only a 10 to 12 min walk from the park... We was there just after Christmas and freezing cold, the cookie and tea in the very small bakery was very well received. we shared 3 cookies between 4 of us, they were fantastic. $4 each is not cheap, but we struggled to eat them all. As we left the queue out the door was huge, two people arrived and asked themselves should we bother to wait 10 mins just for a cookie. I advised them to stay and they did. By chance we saw them 30 mins later by the metro station and thanked us for telling them to stay...... Will keep this on my to do list for NYC.........

“Best cookies in the world!!!”
Reviewed February 20, 2014 via mobile

This bakery deserves its reputation on tripadvisor. The cookies are the BEST in the world!!! Fresh, still Warm and BIG! The store in the upper west side is a bit hard to found if you do not know NYC very well because it is really small, but you have to go there and try it, you will NOT be desappointed!!
