Description: Nestled in New York City's Upper West Side, Levain headquarters is a cozy neighborhood bakery where locals are greeted by name. A steady stream of loyal regulars stand side by side with tourists, eager to sample the legendary baked goods. From an inventive array of rustic breads to the world-famous six-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookie, everything is baked on-site, fresh every day from the finest natural ingredients. What doesn't sell that day goes to help feed the hungry-a mission that has been solidly in place since the beginning. The bakery was founded in 1994 by friends Connie McDonald and Pam Weekes. At the time, Connie was in banking and Pam in Fashion. The two, both competitive swimmers, trained together for the Ironman and-not surprisingly, as their tireless workouts left them feeling starved for great food- they began a passionate dialog about creating the world's greatest chocolate chip cookie. Within just a few years, Levain Bakery had become a neighborhood institution and a destination for epicurious travelers from around the world. Demand continued to grow. In 2000, to satisfy their regular clientele summering in the Hamptons, the two opened a second bakery in the village of Wainscott on Long Island's East End. And today, through their website, they now ship their world-famous cookies to happy fans around the globe.

It's a meal in a cookie so bring your appetite. It's the best cookie spot in the city. The chocolate chocolate chip is amazing. It's a small pick up your goodies and run kind-of place.

Great bakery! Really delicious cookies and chocolate chip even if a bit expensive...but you pay for some really great tastes.
Watch out: it's really a small place so quite difficult to sit there. Better to take away.
It might also be crowded so you may have to wait 10 minutes to get your delicious cookies.

the outside of the cookie was crisp, while the inside was gooey with the melted chocolate chips. Well worth a visit for anyone visiting NYC, especially for dessert lovers like myself. I'd definitely go back to try the other cookies that they have.

ps. Though they make big cookies, the actual bakery is quite small, and doesn't have many seats available. I ended up eating my cookie a in the park in front of the 72nd street subway stop (which is quite close to the bakery).

Don't understand the reviews. It was basic. Don't want to give it a "poor" rating because the food is ok but I'd rather go to Once Upon a Tart in Soho or one of the three locations for Amy's Bread. Those two are WAY better places. This is the definition of "average". Not impressed and no need to go again really.

We made a special trip to the bakery on our last morning in NYC this past weekend because I had read about the amazing choc chip walnut cookies and I had to try them! I have such a sweet tooth, chocolate is my thing, and I cannot get enough baked goods! Although the cookie was good, I dont see what all the fuss is about. It was better than other bakery cookies you will buy, but still does not measure up to a true homemade cookie in my opinion. I can't say I will make a special trip thre again, but if I was in the area I might pop in to try something else on the menu, but I will not be buying the choc chip cookie again. Big dissapointment.
