Description: Nestled in New York City's Upper West Side, Levain headquarters is a cozy neighborhood bakery where locals are greeted by name. A steady stream of loyal regulars stand side by side with tourists, eager to sample the legendary baked goods. From an inventive array of rustic breads to the world-famous six-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookie, everything is baked on-site, fresh every day from the finest natural ingredients. What doesn't sell that day goes to help feed the hungry-a mission that has been solidly in place since the beginning. The bakery was founded in 1994 by friends Connie McDonald and Pam Weekes. At the time, Connie was in banking and Pam in Fashion. The two, both competitive swimmers, trained together for the Ironman and-not surprisingly, as their tireless workouts left them feeling starved for great food- they began a passionate dialog about creating the world's greatest chocolate chip cookie. Within just a few years, Levain Bakery had become a neighborhood institution and a destination for epicurious travelers from around the world. Demand continued to grow. In 2000, to satisfy their regular clientele summering in the Hamptons, the two opened a second bakery in the village of Wainscott on Long Island's East End. And today, through their website, they now ship their world-famous cookies to happy fans around the globe.

Chocolate chip walnut cookie is my favorite. Costs $4.00 each and there is no way I could eat the entire cookie alone. They are soft and delicious and warm A must if you are in NYC!

We visited the bakery in February and I haven't been able to eat any other cookie since then. You cannot overstate how good they are. Served still warm, the crispy outside and melted chocolate chips inside make them more like a decadent dessert than "just a cookie." We've had to have them shipped to us twice since we returned home. I can only eat a half at a time so they last for a while. Chocolate chocolate chip and chocolate peanut butter chip are our favorites but the chocolate chip walnut and oatmeal raisin are just a crumb behind. Amazing and worth a trip to NY just for these.

I generally don't even eat cookies but these are absolutely out of this world. A must try for anybody. We got stuck in a two hour traffic just because of them but it was worth the drive. Tried out of curiosity and now hooked!

If you're looking for a serious chocolate fix, head straight to Levain Bakery for their chocolate chocolate chip cookie...but make sure to lift weights first...this is a heavy one!!! At $4 (and what feels like 2 lbs a piece!), the cookie is a mound of moist, "brownie-like" cookie with plenty of gooey chocolate chips. If you can resist eating the cookie right away, they are equally as delicious a few days later. The bakery is easy to miss if you're not paying close attention, as it's down some stairs. There are only a few stools at a counter for seating if you decide to eat in. This cookie alone would be reason enough to return to New York!!!

I've never tasted a cookie so damn good in my entire life. When you walk by the door of this simple place you can't imagine what you're about to taste. Perfect! I'm going to miss this place.
