Description: Nestled in New York City's Upper West Side, Levain headquarters is a cozy neighborhood bakery where locals are greeted by name. A steady stream of loyal regulars stand side by side with tourists, eager to sample the legendary baked goods. From an inventive array of rustic breads to the world-famous six-ounce chocolate chip walnut cookie, everything is baked on-site, fresh every day from the finest natural ingredients. What doesn't sell that day goes to help feed the hungry-a mission that has been solidly in place since the beginning. The bakery was founded in 1994 by friends Connie McDonald and Pam Weekes. At the time, Connie was in banking and Pam in Fashion. The two, both competitive swimmers, trained together for the Ironman and-not surprisingly, as their tireless workouts left them feeling starved for great food- they began a passionate dialog about creating the world's greatest chocolate chip cookie. Within just a few years, Levain Bakery had become a neighborhood institution and a destination for epicurious travelers from around the world. Demand continued to grow. In 2000, to satisfy their regular clientele summering in the Hamptons, the two opened a second bakery in the village of Wainscott on Long Island's East End. And today, through their website, they now ship their world-famous cookies to happy fans around the globe.

“Worth 4 bucks a cookie!”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

Was in NYC for Labor Day weekend. Had to try this place. Got one of each cookie they had, choco chip walnut, choco choco chip, choco peanut butter chip, oatmeal raisin. Think choco peanut butter chip was my favorite, but all very good. Memorable cookie. Neat little bakery. Got two loaves of bread too, also very tasty. Stop in, you will be glad you did-I was. Note: very small, can get crowded. We went on a non-crowded day and still not spacey-part of the ambiance I think.

“Really?”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

Don't understand the fuss. We went to the Harlem location right after arriving in NYC based on all of the wonderful reviews. No line at all, but quite a limiited selection. Friendly staff. I got the chocolate peanut butter cookie, which was just okay. Big, good flavor but dry. My mom got their coffee and a blueberry muffin and she ate the edges only because it was also dry. Maybe this is a place that people rate highly because they eat with their eyes and not their mouth. I mean, these are impressive looking baked goods. Just wish the flavor would have been as impressive.

“YUM”
Reviewed October 5, 2012

I visit NYC often and I love to go to this bakery every time. $4.00 and it is pricey but it is worth it. There cookies are delicious. Chocolate chip is the best - my opinion. It has a # 1 rating for a reason and yes it isn't even a restaurant. I will be there soon and will be sure to enjoy a cookie. YUM

“Delicious Choc Chip Cookie”

I wouldn't call this a restaurant, but certainly worth a detour for a scrumptious cookie.
Highly recommended.

“Nice But Overrated”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

We came at 6pm their were only 4 in queue. Had 2 cookies: Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip, and payed 8$. It took me a few minutes to realize the amount...Half block away, at Citarella Gourmet [Brdwy/75] we saw a big box of Italian Almond cookies-which we had in the past, for 9.99$. Levain's cookies are double size than the regular Chocolate Chip you know, but come on, 4$ per cookie is a little bit too much. I don't understand how a small bakery can be in the same list as Restaurants. Probably this is the real New York, when something is good, the sky is the limit.
