“We'd go back for the DJ skills alone!!”
Reviewed October 5, 2013

Cheap and cheerful Mexican food in a three story cafe/restaurant/club. The food won't blow you away, but the music was amazing, we sang and danced our way through our meal. Great atmosphere, tasty guacamole, filling food!!

“Underground Mexico”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

Being told about this apparent underground hush-hush Mexican restaurant I was interested to see if it was worth all the hype. To set the scene you walk up to this rather large permanent food van/box where fast food hot dogs are being served and we mentioned of our booking to a non-descript man sitting by himself. Someone appears and ushers us through a back door and down 2 flights of stairs, past the kitchen and into the dining area/bar.
Its dark and funky, many separate sections divided by brick and iron bars with lots of old lighting and accents. After getting a few tasty Mexican beers (Mexican beer only offered) we were moved to our table. 8 people in total raved about how amazing the food was and how well kitted out the environment was. The service was great as we were never searching for drinks. The margaritas were strong and after the amazing food we continued back at the bar for hours. This place attracts the good looking clientele is their early 20`s to late 30`s or that may have just been the dim lights. Defiantly check this place out… it’s an experience and considering the food is quite worthy it’s well worth it.

“Esquina Cafe”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

If you are not cool enough and can't make plans far enough in advance, there's always the cafe around the corner. I love their Tortilla Soup and last weekend made an out-of-my-way detour to go there to sample it. I was ignored at the front door for about 2 minutes when they finally sat me (only because I was blocking the way of other cooler folks trying to enter the space). I ordered the soup and played with my iPhone while watching the model/model wanna-be waitresses give attitude to the other patrons. Pretty funny and then saw two model-type customers walk in and treated with respect from the waitresses- professional courtesy. I loves me some Tortilla Soup and then on my way.

“Points for the cool factor”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

The food is solid - nothing incredible, but good. It seemed a little overpriced for what it was. The thing is - you just feel a little cooler when you're dining at a secret underground restaurant, so that makes up for it.

“Excellent Mexican food after the initial surprise!”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

We were recommended this restaurant and you need to book in advance to be sure of a table. When we arrived we asked the taxi driver if we were in the right place. Having walked into the well used takeaway we were told to wait at the side. When we were met we were told to go through the steel door and down the stairs and wandered through the kitchens until we go to the restaurant which proved to be excellent. The service was very good and our waitress guided us through the menu as it was our first visit.
The corn on the cob had been coated and marinated and we also had spare ribs. Both were delicious. If you are in New York you have to try this restaurant. Don't walk away based on first impressions!
