“Perfect romantic getaway in the heart of one of the best neighborhoods in NYC”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2010

This charming bed and breakfast, with a lovely garden, in a historic brownstone on one of the most beautiful blocks in Chelsea, is run by a warm, welcoming, and sophisticated NYC couple. The bed was SO comfortable, it's a very quiet location, and just steps away from great art galleries, shops, and restaurants. A 24-hour visit felt like a true vacation! I actually felt like I had my own pied-a-terre in NYC. My husband and I can't wait to go back again!!!

After a recent eight-day stay at this B&B, we came away with mixed feelings. The studio is quiet and convenient but travelers should be aware of these pros and cons:

PROS
•The back of the studio opens to a beautiful, shared garden with comfortable lounge chairs
•Room is in a lovely brownstone on a tree-lined, quiet street, exceptionally convenient to major attractions and shopping areas
•Subway, markets, and a wide variety of restaurants are less than two blocks away
•Easy in/out from (sub)ground floor location
•No traffic noise
•Many conveniences of home, including well-stocked kitchenette, CD player, books, ample storage, bath supplies
•Somewhat larger than average NYC hotel room
•Good artificial light

CONS
•Booking requires a NON-REFUNDABLE deposit of 50% of charge for entire stay. Cancellation means forfeiting your full deposit.
•The entire balance is due at check-in. Host prefers cash or travelers checks
•The ceiling, not visible in online photos, has exposed heating ducts and water pipes
•The B&B comprises a single ground floor room of a family’s five-story brownstone
•You walk down 10 steps from street level and through a hallway to enter the room
•Private bathroom is small – approximately 7’ x 5’ with a half size sink and 2/3 size tub/shower
•AC underperforms in hot weather
•Limited natural light enters from two small windows on the garden end of the studio
•No-host means no daily service -- you’re on your own to change linen, empty trash, and clean the kitchenette and bath. Breakfast is not served.
•Checkout time, not posted in the room, is a firm 11 AM. A request to vacate one hour later was denied, although we were invited to leave our bags in the room for the extra hour and get lunch.

We would like to respond to some of the negative impressions this review may have left, and remind the current reader that this review is almost three years old.

It is true that we require a 50% deposit, but with one apartment to rent this is our only guarantee that we will not be left without a booking at the last minute due to cancellation. We do not require that the balance be paid at check-in. We accept cash, travelers checks, MasterCard,Visa, PayPal and bank transfers.

There is no intention of hiding the fact that this is an English basement apartment, not below ground. There are some pipes, but they are not a prominent feature of the room, nor do they inhibit the guest in any way. The “limited” natural light is in fact a large window and a door that opens out to the garden.

The air conditioning has been upgraded and remedies the admittedly previously inadequate unit.

We’re not sure what is “con” about entering below street level – it is in fact “easy in/out”. The stairs are shallow and wide; the entrance is private and well lit; the hallway is clean, but a few steps long and also well lit.

There is no daily maid service, but linen is changed for guests who are with us for more than four days, as are towels, which are available in abundance along with terrycloth robes.

Finally, the posted checkout time is inflexible only if we have other guests arriving the same day, and departing guests are always welcome to leave their bags to be picked up later. Again, we have to accommodate the realities of having only one apartment to offer.
