When we visited NYC on our honeymoon 25 years ago, we said if we came back we would stay here. So on our silver wedding anniversary we pushed the boat out and decided to spend our last night in NYC at the Plaza. We arrived 1 1/2 hours too early, so left our cases and disappeared for 2 hours. When we arrived back it took over 20 minutes with the receptionist to get a room assigned - he kept disappearing into another room for minutes at a time, leading me to think I had done something wrong!!! I have to agree with BeachBaby 187 review, that the hotel lacks that special reception area, especially after such a glamorous entrance. Also the hotel itself looks a little tired to me in certain areas. For the amount of money I spent for the night there is a lot of the finer details missing (see my review of the Hotel Chandler - free wifi and free 24 hr coffee, both lacking at the Plaza). There is a feeling it is living on it's past.
The champagne bar was great, the waiters were so funny and exceptionally friendly - encouraging me to spend lots of money!! The concierge service was exceptional.
The room was a external room, but alas a view of one of the side roads, not central park or the square. Room was comfortable, all the usuals, fridge, small TV, robes and slippers. Bathroom was something else, however mastic around the bath was poor (sorry hotel inspector mode there).
All in all, I am so happy that I stayed, but do feel it is expensive and they could add little touches - come on free wi-fi, instead of $14.95 per day! If you do want a special night, then I do recommend the Plaza, but there is part of me that thinks you could find equally exceptional places to stay in NYC that gives you something more for the same or less money.

Room Tip: Try and get an external view room.

Dear Tricky273,

Thank you for your post your review and sharing your experience with us. First and foremost, congratulations on your 25th wedding anniversary! We are honored that you chose to come back to The Plaza. I'm please to hear that you enjoyed your overall stay, in particular your guestroom and our colleagues at The Champagne Bar, however disappointed to learn that you felt some of the smaller details were missing. I'd like to take this opportunity to point out that WIFI is complimentary to members of our loyalty program, Fairmont President's Club, which is also free to join and includes many additional benefits. Thank you, again, for your post!

Warm regards,
Tracy Lowe, Hotel Manager

Everyone was polite and courteous. Never waited long for any response or service. Hotel was super nice. Lots of nice detail. Many grand areas that greeted you at every turn. Right near central park. We both felt we were on cloud 9 the entire stay..

We were actually spending a night in NYC before we officially started our Honeymoon in Iceland. I guess the honeymoon started early! The plaza hotel was beautiful. It felt line you were going back in time and connecting with all the hustle and bustle of times past. As we checked in the front desk said that since this is your 1st time here, were going to upgrade you to a suite. Great 1st impression. The room was huge. The artwork and the design of the room was upscale and timeless. The bed had a mink blanket on top, and it was sooo comfortable. The concierge called as soon as we arrived asking if we needed any assistance. Nice touch. We went downstairs for lunch and the food was incredible. We shared an egg sandwich which was to die for, and a turkey, bacon, avocado sandwich which was the best I ever had. Ordered a Bloody Mary and they served it with a colossal piece of shrimp cocktail. Had to take a picture of the presentation. We stayed here one night, but it was a night we won't forget. Highly recommend.

Beautiful old hotel. Slightly disappointed that the "view" part is condos - we looked out over other buildings. However, you're not in New York to sit in the room all day, so it's not a biggie. The location is perfect - walking distance to so much, and just over the road from Central Park. Staff were good, beds very comfortable with lovely linen, bathrooms very opulent. One rip-off was the breakfast - about $50/head for a "buffet" that consisted of bacon, eggs, potatoes, some basic continental goods, and ONE two-piece toaster. A group of us turned up at the bar after dinner one night (not rowdy) and we were surprised that in this day and age in a city like New York, they served us one drink and then closed. Although it is a lovely hotel, I found it a little over-priced and slightly over-rated.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your post. We are happy to hear that overall you enjoyed your stay, in particular our central location, opulent bathrooms, and comfortable beds. I would like to take this opportunity to point out that our Breakfast service is competitively priced for our midtown location, though I will certainly share your feedback with the team. Sometimes being at an amazing hotel is not enough. You usually expect to have the whole experience, and service does it all.

At The Plaza, you will find that the staff is constantly pampering you with great attitude. They are always happy and willing to help your stay become one of the best experiences ever.

Caudalie Spa being one of the only spas in the world with winetherapy is excellent! Nothing but great things to say about their massages and nice facilities.

24/7 room service is awesome, try mozarella/pepperoni pizza!!!!

Beds and pillows are the best.

Location is also the best.

It is definitely a great experience at NYC, it changes your whole traveling experience.

We have been staying at the Plaza since 2001 prior to the hotel splitting off half for condos. The beautiful entrance to the front desk is gone. The main dining room was closed. Our room was not ready, in spite of only being 15 minutes early. The staff tries hard, but the true elegance of this once fine hotel is really gone. We stayed in an Edwardian Suite. the butler makes a big deal that he comes with the room, but in reality he will simply bring you ice if you call for it, shine shoes, and another insignificant task. The location is great. Across the street from Central Park. The food court on the lower level is good for a morning cup of coffee, and pastry, but all other food places are average at best. No coffee in the rooms, very sparse amenities and the new line of hotel products left us buying our own at the local drugstore, because the smell is so bad. Beware. We also had to have our bed switched for a better mattress as this one sank in the middle. This is the third disappointing stay for us and the last. NYC has great hotels, but this one sadly has fallen below Fairmont (Plaza) standards.
