“Nice Hotel in a good area”
Reviewed June 3, 2011

Nice tiny rooms with an excellent service at the counter. The rooms were equiped with HD TV. The service was excellent but the air condition was very loud but necessary in this building. The hotel is in a very good spot only 2 minutes from the subway Columbus Ave. Only 2 stations away from the times square and directly at the central park. So therefore this hotel is an ideal location for jogging in the central park

We discovered The Empire Hotel online, accidentally ... it's wonderful! I was so impressed that this beautiful building is right at Lincoln Center (great location) and beautifully maintained. The sleeping rooms were a model of "everything thought out -- and well" -- it's not a lot of space (this is NYC, after all), but EVERYTHING is there, and it's comfortable and pretty. We loved the fresh flowers, the beautiful design of the lobby, the great food in The Chowder House restaurant. But the strongest thing about this hotel is the people who work there. They are, in our experience, to a person, kind, thoughtful, friendly and helpful. I travel for a living, so I experience a lot of hotels all over the world. This one is truly impressive. And the price we paid was MUCH less than I would have expected to pay for all this. Here's hoping The Empire is able to stay just the way it is!

I stayed here for my brothers wedding in April 2010. Travelling with a small baby we did have our reservations but nothing could prepare us for the nightmare that would follow. Arriving at the hotel at 7pm we were keen to get to our room and get our baby to sleep. We had emailed a request for a cot to be present in the room and also rang ahead to confirm this was the case. We were told that there was no record of this on the booking. However a cot would arrive straight away. 2 hours later following 10 visits to an empty front desk and having been repeatedly been told "it's in the lift" or even better "they are in the corridor" (whilst I walked around the corridor unable to spot the invisible cot). Eventually it arrived with a now hysterical child beyond comfort. We had booked a king size room - no such booking available and no room available. As other reviews the room was so small that it we were barely able to unpack our suitcases. We had stayed in NY the previous year and had no so such problems. No offer of compensation until we complained for the 10th time to the manager - free breakfast! Brilliant. We then got moved to a new room on the 11th floor - the whole floor was like a sauna and the room even hotter! Window wide open / closed -air con on full blast - no difference and no support from the hotel. All in all a dreadful stay and one which ruined our time in NY. This place is great if are happy to sleep in a box room and have as poor service as you imagine. Returning? You must be joking!

When we entered into the hotel, the lobby gave the impression of being a classy and sophisticated hotel as well as it being modern. We were greeted by a very friendly and helpful front desk who quickly got us settled into our room. The room that we stayed in was extremely clean, decorated nicely, and the beds were large and had remarkably soft linens. The showers were amazingly comfortable and had a rainfall style to them. I was treated with respect and had a great experience and would definitely recommend staying at this hotel again.

Took a world tour in April / May 2011. During the trip we stayed at maybe 12 hotels. The Empire Hotel was the most expensive in the whole trip. We stayed at 4-star hotels and some 3-star. The Empire Hotel was also the worst from the point of view of the following: cramped standard room, fixtures and fittings not working or in poor repair, queues at front desk, concierge service poor. The only real saving graces were the bell staff who were friendly and helpful, and the lady on the front desk, Vanna, who worked tirelessly - against the odds. The other saving grace was the location, which was very central and convenient. I complained, was upgraded, and then it was better, but still poor value for money, and not a great experience. My experience is that there are a lot better hotels for the money than this one.

My first time ever writing a review on Trip Advisor. This is one of the worst hotels I've stayed at in NYC. It is quite outdated. I got a good deal for my 3 night stay however through Travel Zoo at $189/night. The outdated A/C was very loud. You can hear it turn on and off during the day and night. You could not adjust the temperature, just max, min, or off. The walls were paper thin. I could hear all my neighbors down the hall close or open their doors. You could hear people walking down the hallway and talking. The humidity level in the hallways and the room was out of control, which makes the summer stay even more unbearable. The bathroom was puny. The edge of the door to the bathroom almost reached the toilet. You could not sit there and close the door. This is one of the smallest bathrooms that I've been in in NYC. The other smallest bathrooms I've been in was at the Hudson Hotel, a few blocks away in Columbus Circle. The shower was missing a glass door. I think they attempted a Euro style shower style that FAILED. Every time I took shower, half the bathroom floor would be drenched in water. When the maid service cleaned the room, they did not even give me more towels. Wifi -- Paying $12.95 is a ripoff. It is completely unreliable. I stayed here 2yrs ago and expected them to improve it. It was unreliable back then, too. Wifi in this day and age should be complementary. Location is great if you want to be in the Upper Westside and close to Columbus Circle and next to the Lincoln Center. It has heavy tourist traffic though. Expect to pay at least $20 in cabfare if you head down to the MPD or Soho.
