One of the worse experiences from a years worth of travelling. When we arrived they had no recollection of our booking. I had printed the conformation and they said all bookings in the whole of New York were cancelled, I have no idea how this would be possible. We argued for 5 or so minutes before the manager came and gave us a room for massively more money! We still stayed there as we didn’t have much option as it was 2 days before New Years Eve! We were in reception a few days later and they were doing the exact same thing to three young girls! A shame they did this as the location was actually aright being so close to the subway. We did see a couple of cockroaches, but no sign of bed bugs. I would have given it 3 out of 5 for the money, no frills and ok location, but the people who run this place are just criminals.

Definitely this is a no frills hotel. We arrived to the hotel and thanks to TripAdvisor I was able to identify it, since the canopy still says: Royal Mount hotel. There were some random people loitering outside of the hotel. We went inside and the lobby looked so so. There was no trash in the floor but some of the trashcans were fulled. I used the restroom on the lounge and it was cleaned.

The rooms were really small, ours looked clean (it's hard to tell on the carpet since is dark blue) I was able to fit 2 carryons on the small closet. Besides the bed there was no other furniture than the TV. The bed sheets looked like they have seen better days, but they were clean (and had holes). My sister had brought some bed sheets so we used those after we pushed aside the comforter. Also, I checked for bed bugs and no bed bugs. The towels were paper thin and they had ran out, so I am glad we had our own,

The AC worked properly but it was noisy.I didn't turn on our TV. My friend did on his room and it had cable.

The bathrooms were shared by the whole floor. When we arrived they were clean and we tried to used them really early since people were sleeping. They are clean twice a day. I took a shower when we arrived and it was clean. Although there was no hand soap nor towels to dry your hands. The tub bottom was peeling out but it was clean.

This hotel has a great location, close to the subway in a safe neighborhoord. But is not the place you want to be hanging out all day. Is perfect only for sleeping.

You have to pay to use the Internet, no free wifi :(

The staff is awful, one guy when we checked out just told us to drop the key in the lobby and leave. We had to look for him outside to check out. Also, they won't clean your room unless you request it. We didn't want to, we were worried they might steal our stuff.

When we arrived the person behind reception was fantastic, but when the staff changed the service changed. The room was compact but there was enough room to store all of our stuff that we had taken for the 4 week we were backpacking, the location of the hostel was really good it was very close the hudson river which was nice and it was just a short journey to time square and other main attractions.

it was ok... have never stayed in a hostel & after reading some of the reviews on here was a little bit skepetical but it was an ok place to stay... you get what you pay for... the location however is brilliant... the staff were helpful... you do however have to pay for wireless internet... but once paid for was really good.

This was our first time in New York and after booking the hostel on the spur of the moment we were slightly worried when we started to read the reviews on here. Therefore we built ourselves up for some bedbug infested pit but when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised! Albeit the entrance did smell a bit of wee but once inside everything was fine.

We arrived slightly earlier than the given check in time and the person on reception informed us there were lockers in the basement we could store our luggage in. However after a trip down (and seeing how much they cost!) we decided that we might as well just wait in reception with our suitcases and plan what we were going to do in the Big Apple. This seemed to work out quite well because after 10 minutes the person on reception came to tell us that our room was ready – bonus! Just a quick note on the staff (as I know from previous reviews quite a few people found them rude), that we found every staff member to be pleasant enough. Plus when my friend thought there was something wrong with our door they were more than willing to move us into another room starightaway – they even let us inspect at the room first. It turned out my friend is just daft and the door functioned perfectly!

Our room was minimal and clean - not one of those famous bedbugs in sight! When we arrived the shared bathroom was spotless – this, however, cannot be said after our long-haired, insomniac neighbour used it in the early hours! But this wasn’t to do with the hostel and it was spotless again the following morning. The location was brill and in a safe enough area – an excellent base to explore the wonders of the city from.

Thanks to the heads up from fellow travellers on here I was armed with the correct address and knew that the signing was not the most accurate. Note to Candy Hostel – you should at least put your name up outside the hostel!

I would recommend this hostel to anyone that is just looking for somewhere to grab a couple of hours sleep before heading out again. If you’re looking to spend a bit more time in a room (god knows why in New York!) or for a bit more luxury then look elsewhere. I wouldn’t go expecting anything more than basic from somewhere named the Candy Hostel!
