After hearing all the hype it's easy to think " It's just a pork bun, how good could it be?". Well.... it's that good. We had the duck. It was excellent and a lot of fun to eat. Served on a large platter for the whole table. "Family style" if you will. A nice change from the "small plates" we have become so used to. Service was excellent. Try it.

Our second time at Momofuku Ssam Bar, we knew we had to try something different. We ended ordering both the Duck and Pork Ssam. We had the pork ssam on our previous visit - it was excellent. But the surprise is that the Duck ssam is even better - the flavor is amazing!

David Chaing's influence cannot be denied but a recent visit to Ssam Bar makes clear the dangers of the big empire he's building - quality control. The food was very good but some dishes just didn't meet the mark. For example: The pork buns were delicious but the Shanghai noodles were oily and bland. The asparagus was very good - lots of layered flavors. Cocktails were good but service rushed with the food coming at the same time as the cocktails which came slowly. The restaurant was jammed but we were lucky to get a seat fairly quickly - just lucked out.

I have one word for you: buns! you can't go wrong with these; pork belly steamed buns or bbq buns, both delicious. The duck sandwich was amazing as well. The other fusion inventive combos I don't stand up for, I stick with my first love. Service is (somewhat too) quick and attentive. Go early as they don't take reservations and it's usually crowded and difficult to get a place.

This is a wildly popular restaurant in the David Chang empire. It is busy w/repeat business because the food just wows. The combinations of spices and unusual ingredients serves to layer a melody of flavors as you eat. Ingredients are fresh, artfully prepared and excite the palate. Don't get discouraged by the crowds, seats open up fairly quickly.
