I was stunned by the petty, amateurish showing of Park Hyatt NY after I had more than a decade of favorable experiences at the Park Hyatt properties in Tokyo and Shanghai. Upon morning arrival a valet acknowledged us but walked away instead of carrying our two heavy bags to reception. No valet was present after check-in either so we again had to self-carry our two bags up to the room. We showered upon arriving, and depleted the single, provided 1.7 oz bottles of shampoo and conditioner, which we did not notice housekeeping had failed to replace until after we had begun to shower again in the evening. All that was left of hygiene products at this time was the small bar of solid soap provided for use at the sink. Relatively minor disappointments in the restaurant: they gave us a tattered copy of the newspaper, and served coffee without cream or sugar. We complained to a manager who had a bottle of wine brought to our room, well-intentioned, but unwelcome since we don’t drink. When I requested a late check out I was informed that “our tier allowed us to depart at 1 PM.” By this time I wished more than anything that the management were not treating us as a commodity, and seeking to save money, in every imaginable way. I would’ve highly valued at least the pretense of them checking to see whether the room would actually be unoccupied for us to stay longer. Fact is our room was more than $1000 a night, so the desire to a economise reflected only the hotel’s intention, not mine. Moreover our experience would be unacceptable at any price. I recommend visitors to New York avoid the disrespectful and penny-pinching treatment we had at Park Hyatt NY.
