Jazz on the City Hostel
Reviewed September 4, 2007

Stayed at the Jazz on the city 8/31-9/3. I have never stayed at a hostel before and was quite leary. My travel partner insisted that we travel as cheaply as possible and this was the best option that also included a private bath. I love this place and will stay here every time I visit NY. While most hostel cater to younger crowds, I did not feel out of place or unwelcome at all. I also was not disturbed by loud noises or "parties". Our room (404) was SPOTLESS and I know clean. I really appreciated the industrial floor, as it keeps down germs and such. The bathroom was sparkling clean. The tile in the shower looked fresh and was free from mold. The shower curtain also looked new, no mold or dark stains anywhere. The room was tiny but who cares about that in NY??? Everyday, our room was cleaned and we were given new (albeit threadbare) towels. I had brought towels from home anyway. Two single beds, with priavte bath and a small flat screen TV. After staying here I am now an ambassador for hostels and traveling cheaply. I really no longer see the need to save for a year to stay at the W when I can literlly decide to go to NY anytime and be able to afford it.

Me and my partner arrived late on a wednesday night just as their computersystem had crashed. Although we had to wait for 40 minutes before they could check us in, the service was great och they were very attentive. The room that we had booked, double private ensuite, was small but very clean and had the basics. We had windows towards the street, wich was a bit noisy but not that bad during night. The biggest problem although was poeple coming and going during the night.....the walls are VERY thin and if you are not a heavy sleeper this will keep you awake. Otherwise I would definately recommend staying here. Great location, close to both the metro and Hyde park.

This is the first hostel I have stayed at and was a little leary about staying here. My friends and I rented a room with 6 beds so that we could all have our own room together. The room was small but clean. The bathroom was tiny but was clean except for the shower curtain which was absolutely disgusting and full of mold! On day one of our trip, our sink fell off the wall! It was fixed promptly though and was okay for the rest of our visit. This hostel has no elevator so be prepared to walk up a lot of stairs if your room is on a high floor.

The best part of the hostel? Friendly staff, excellent location and very good value for the money.

Worst? The nasty shower curtain, the fact that room was very cold at night (wear lots of extra layers) and the only other thing I can think of is there was no mirror in the room except the small one in the bathroom.

Overall, a good, safe and clean room to stay for an excellent price in New York city.
