Description: Chef Michael Psilakis and partner Donatella Arpaia have moved their rustic Greek gem, Kefi, to a larger space at 505 Columbus Avenue. The new, 200-seat interior evokes the feeling of a palatial Greek hideaway broken up into several smaller dining rooms to keep Kefi’s intimate appeal. The menu of favorites straight from Psilakis’ childhood will remain the same with some new additions. Signature dishes like Baccala, crispy-fried cod with garlic potatoes and tomato, Grilled Octopus with bean salad, and Hilopita, baked pasta with rabbit ragout and béchamel are still on offer. Additions include Grilled Sardines with chopped “Greek Salad” and garlic sauce, Macaronia Spestofai, tubular pasta with Greek sausage, peppers, onions, tomato and feta and an entirely new section of Greek Sandwiches featuring house-made sausages and pork and lamb gyro.

“Coming back again - great meal!”
Reviewed April 4, 2014

My co-workers and I were looking for a restaurant in the area, and decided on Kefi based on reviews and the fact that we wanted fish. We arrived early for our reservation, but were seated immediately in the almost full restaurant (on a Thursday evening). We ordered the spreads and the Grilled octopus for appetizers. The spreads were very good (although I would have liked a bit more pita bread) but that octopus was EXCEPTIONAL. If I'd known, I would have had it as a main course. The taste of the grill pervaded not only the octopus (a large, thick, tender piece) but also the chick-peas and tomatoes is sat on. Between us, we cleaned the plate. We had the grilled striped bass and the swordfish entrees. Both cooked to perfection, and the accompanying potatoes and vegetables were different on each plate, and superb.

Oh, and the prices were VERY reasonable!!

Although crowded and slightly noisy, there was a lot of staff and the service was excellent. It is obviously popular, but it was comfortable and we had a lovely evening. Can't wait to be back in NY and come back here.

“A Keeper”
Reviewed March 31, 2014

What a great local restaurant. The beet salad was refreshing and tasty, the sea bas with brussels sprouts was crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside, the hangar steak was tender and cooked to perfection. And even though very crowded, service was attentive and helpful and friendly. It could not have been any better. I'll come back here every time I get to NYC. Make sure you have reservations! You will not find better Greek food anywhere...this restaurant cannot be beat!

“My Grandmother is Fired!”
Reviewed March 26, 2014

What a meal! I spend time in Greece every year, so I tend to judge Greek restaurants harshly. Kefi is incredible! The eggplant dish was one of the best meals I have ever had anywhere. My friends lamb shank was also exceptional. My grandmother is going to be upset!

TIP: Make a reservation. The food is so good that it was busy even on a Wednesday night with freezing cold winds. Also, get the Metaxa Grande Fine brandy with dessert.

“Traditional Greek”
Reviewed March 26, 2014

Went to Kefi on recommendation by Frommers Guide Book. Certainly lived up to recommendation. Great atmosphere and service. Lovely food and wine and really good value for money. Recommend 100% - really glad we went. Party consisted of 2 adults and 2 late teen/early twenties and all really enjoyed. Endorse recommendation to reserve a table as we went on a Wednesday evening in February and it was packed to the rafters. All had different dishes and all equally enjoyed. Atmosphere is noisy as the restaurant was full but this only added to the enjoyment - had a good vibe. Do go and give it a try.

“Authentic Greek Food in NYC!”
Reviewed March 13, 2014

I really liked Kefi. During my previous stay in NYC I was unable to visit this restaurant, as it was closed due to flooding damage.

The place is big and highly popular, so reservations are essential. The food is authentic Greek. The dishes taste the same as in Athens or anywhere else in Greece. The portions are generous and the service is fast.

In general, an excellent option to have authentic Greek food in Manhattan at reasonable prices.
