“Nice budget option”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2014

I stayed here for a few nights in April. Having never been to New York before, I found it quite easily - New York is easy to navigate. The staff were so friendly, welcoming and helpful. We stayed in a private double room with a bathroom. It was a bit run down, but had everything we needed, including soap and towels. It's a shame the WiFi only works in the lobby but it's great to have it anyway. It was expensive for what it was, but I would definitely stay again, I had a great time. It;s a short subway ride to central NY, and there are some great shops etc around for food and drink too. Oh, and they had a printer so I could print my boarding passes!!

Thank you so much for staying with us. We are so glad that you had an enjoyable time in New York. Also, we are currently working on installing wifi on all floors. So, hopefully, during your next stay we will be able to offer wifi in your room.

We had booked a double room with a shared bathroom. The hostel is as described. The reception staff are very friendly and helpful. However, a number of factors made our stay difficult:
1. On the first day we had the impression that our sheets were not totally clean, due to finding a number of long black hairs on the sheets. After mentioning the find to the cleaning staff, the sheets were changed the next day.
2. Moreover, although possibly to be expected, the rooms were pretty loud. You could hear your neighbors having conversations, their coming and going, and because the windows were single glazed they allowed a lot of the street noise to filter into the room. This was only a minor downside considering we spent most of the day outside. However, it was a problem on some nights when trying to sleep.
3. Importantly, Wifi is only in the lobby and the TV in our room did not work. We did get a 10% discount for the TV not working, but only after raising the point at reception.
4. Finally, on one occasion the maintenance staff posted a sign that there would be no hot water from 9:30 onwards the next morning. However, the maintenance staff switched off the hot water at 8:45. After pointing this out, the hotel reception got the maintenance staff, after 30 minutes, to turn the hot water back on for 5 minutes so that we didn't have to shower in freezing water.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for a few nights last month and the place was just about perfect. We arrived and our room was ready and clean. Many people talk about the noise (you're on Broadway in New York City. What do you expect) but it wasn't bad at all in our opinions. The entire place was clean and the staff were friendly at all hours of the night. Little far away from all the hustle and bustle of New York but still a great stay. I would highly recommend you staying here on your next trip.

A couple, in our 50s, with a one night layover in NYC. Front desk staff friendly and helpful. Very clean room. We booked a room without a bathroom, but were pleasantly surprised to have a sink and ample towels in our room. The shared bathroom was clean, and the water hot.
The TV did not work, and when we asked about it, they immediately offered us 10% back on our credit card.
Very good location for metro, restaurants, Central Park. Not enough time for us to enjoy the area, but another trip...
The rooms are not overly sound-proof, but that is why they make earplugs.
There is a kitchen/sitting area on the main floor, wifi was intermittent in the room, but not bad.
We had an early flight out of JFK, and found it worked great to take the metro(one block walk), then LIRR, Airtrain. Total trip was under $15 each, and only took 45 minutes. We found the times/route/prices online. Taxi was going to be about $60, if I remember right. Not a big deal, but $30+ saving and adds more local flavour to the trip.
Would stay there again, for a night or two, but prefer own bathroom for longer.

Good location with close connections to the subway. Central park is a few blocks away and it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to walk to times square.

The neighbourhood is safe and has a few cool bars/restaurants.

Rooms are large and clean.

The staff are awesome.

Would definitely stay again..

We wanted to stay in and see New York City. We didn't want to pay the earth for a hotel room that you would only spend so little time in anyway, so we chose this hotel. My wife and I chose to stay in one of the bedroom suites with an en suite shower facility, whilst our daughters, who were coming to the end of their round the world trip were happy to stay in a room only, with a communal shower and toilet facilities. Whilst we were two floors apart, the hotel was just what we wanted, as base from which we could explore the city. True you had to go down several flights of stairs, or use the lift, to reach the lobby and the kitchen facilities, but they were all clean and tidy, with helpful staff to give you guidance of how to get around. TV and Wifi connections in the communal lounge, were good although you had to endure some very poor taste in TV watching whilst using the internet etc.
The hotel is reasonably well placed with easy access as you would expect to all of the city sights amenities etc. We had no issues using public transport and the tube. We spent many hours walking around the city and Central Park, which is just two blocks away. True we were spoilt by the weather, mid eighties with plenty of warm late season sunshine, but if you want a good base but not to pay extortionate prices then we would recommend this establishment. Don't be put off by the word Hostel appearing alongside the word hotel, yes there were several groups of students there, but they were well organised / supervised and like everyone were only there first thing in the morning/evening. There were no issues in the hotel and we would happily return there for another visit.

BACKGROUND ON US:
We like to stay in nice places normally. Nice boutique hotels or the big chains (ie. Hyatts). This was a choice we decided upon - less expensive stay for the comfort of paying for cabs all throughout New York. We just stayed here for two nights and stayed with a friend for the rest (which was much more comfortable!)

FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
We arrived at the Broadway Hotel/Hostel and the lobby area and common area were much more attractive than the rest of the place, but that is okay. I read that this was the case in the reviews and was not shocked.

CUSTOMER SERVICE:
The front desk people were very helpful - there is a $5 deposit for the key and checking out by 11:00 am. Which I got back by doing just those things! We did not need to ask for much from them just checking in and checking out.

ROOM:
We were happy with the sink, having a hand towel, shampoo and soap. We had four large towels as well. It was old the window FELT like there was wind coming in, but we were perfectly snug as a bug in the room and never felt cold. The sheets had holes, maybe some old stains, but I tried hard to not look for problems and just deal.

As others have mentioned the TV did not work, which did not bother me one bit - I had realistic expectations and knew of these problems.

BATHROOM:
Communal - never felt comfortable going in there ...in fear of seeing bugs (as pictured in other travelers photos) We were on the third level so there were two bathrooms and I chose to use the newer looking one every time. The shower was great! It had a rainfall shower head - BRING FLIP FLOPS! I forgot to so I laid towels inside and outside of the shower. PLUS New York and bathrooms --- completely disgusting. Where are the freaking seat covers?! Everyone just pees all over the seats. ICK! Not just here but EVERYWHERE.

I give it 3 out of 5 because it really did assist in saving us money and I knew where we were going.

Room Tip: Choose a corner room - it has more privacy and less neighbors for noise.
