“Excellent stay during the travel chaos”
Reviewed May 1, 2010

We were originally scheduled to stay at the HGI Chelsea for 5 nights but ended up staying 13 nights due to the volcanic ash fiasco and every day was a pleasure despite our lives being in total disarray. The staff could not have been more helpful sorting out extra nights with little notice and even new accommodation when it looked like we would have to move hotels (thankfully we managed to stay at the HGI throughout our extended stay).
The hotel is in a good location even if 28th Street on first pass looks to be a little away from the action. Macys (34th Street) was a mere 10 minures walk and Times Square barely 20 minutes. A slow stroll up to Central Park was an hour with plenty of window shopping. A taxi anywhere seemed to be no more that $10 with tip (best option with 4 of us and on par with the subway cost).
Round the corner on 7th Avenue there were plenty of places for quick take-out food and provisions, a good number of bars and places to eat but we ended up eating a little further afield most nights (see below). We had an acceptable breakfast most mornings at Charleston's Grill on 7the Ave between 29th and 30th Streets (about $7 each). We did not eat at the HGI but the breakfast looked good.
WiFi in the hotel was a little weak but useable and the business centre had two good PCs and printing facilities.
The rooms were a good size and very well cleaned each day. The fridge and microwave were useful. There was some street noise at the front on the 11th floor but it was acceptable.
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our longer than expected stay at the HGI Chelsea and would definitely recommended the hotel.
Another big thanks to the staff for being so helpful.
Restaurant recommendations - Blue Smoke (E 27th), Havana Central (W 46th), Les Halles (411 Park Ave between 28th & 29th)), Five Napkin Burger (49th & 9th), John's Pizzeria (W 44th), Lombardi's (Spring Street at Mott Street, Little Italy). Enjoy!

This is a fantastic hotel in a fantastic location. located on west 28th street between 6th and 7th, the hotel is set right in the flower district of midtown Chelsea, The area looks a bit run down but felt perfectly safe at all times. At each end of the street, there are two subway stops, making it really easy to get where you need to go......

Tip: Make sure you purchase a 7 day metro card for $27, the easiest and cheapest way of getting around NYC. They're also good for buses.

The staff were always pleasant and ready to help. The room that we had was a king on the 10th floor. Had read a few reviews that they thought the rooms were to small but being from the UK I thought they were more than big enough. Never had an Issue waiting for the lift/elevator neither.

Great amenities include...

Free Wifi - Bit of an issue to get connected but the staff soon sorted it out.
HD Cable with loads of channels
Fridge/Microwave
Proper coffee percolator - Loving this first thing in the morning.
Free neutrogena products replaced everyday.

Cant comment on the breakfast as wasn't included in our rate and looked a bit expensive.
Also. the only thing we got caught out on was buying drink from the store in the lobby, £2 for a can of sprite. Still cheaper than most hotel minibars etc but there's a pharmacy at the end of the block which is much cheaper,

Anyway, was brilliant staying at this hotel and would definitely stay here again when coming back to NYC.

I recently stayed at the HGI Chelsea on a trip to NYC with my girlfriends. We couldn't have picked a better hotel! The rooms are rather large for NYC, newly decorated and modern, and it is so nice to have 2 comfortable Queen beds in a room vs 2 doubles. Plus, the rooms have mini fridges and microwaves. It is in a great location near Greenwich Village and Union Square. The hotel only has 169 rooms, so it has the feel of a boutique hotel with all the benefits of staying at a Hilton.

The hotel is in a convenient location near two subway stations. .

Our room was large by New York standards and was of high quality. We were travelling with two young children and the room could easily accomodate us all

The staff were friendly and attentive.

Breakfast was included in our rate and was also very good.

Just arrived back from New York following being stranded there for an extra week. I booked this hotel on the Hilton Garden Inn website for a rate of $165 a night for 3 nights including breakfast from the 13th April until the 16th April and these first 3 days were fantastic, quick check in, super room, great breakfast and super location. On the morning of checking out, we found out our flight was cancelled due to the volcano erruption in Iceland. Upon hearing this news and being given a new flight for the 21st April, we explained we needed the room for an extra 5 nights, which we were told was fine and they also said they would freeze the rate of $165 we were already paying as the rate had gone up to $205 a night. However that night (our 4th night there) we were talking to another couple and they were told they were not able to guarantee them a room for the next night, so we went to the desk to double check we were still ok. This is when we were told they could not guarantee us a room either and that the rate would be $385 a night. This being completely the opposite to what we were told in the morning, when we were told we had the room for 4 more nights and that it would be at the frozen rate of $165. Therefore due to this crazy rate, we had to find an alternative hotel as we simply could not afford this, plus the fact they could not guarantee us a room. This is the last thing you want when your stranded in a country, being ripped off and also the chance of being without a roof over your head.
In terms of the hotel, the breakfast is good if you have it included in the price, as they charge around $20 each. The room is a good size, nice and modern with decent bathroom. The room has a microwave, fridge and 32 inch TV with loads of channels on. The street the hotel is located on is very quiet and safe, and is a few blocks from the Empire State Building, and Times Square is about 12 blocks away, so about 25 minute walk. All in all a great hotel in a super location, and I would of given it the full 5 stars, but the expericence we went through in terms of one minute having a room for the next 4 nights, and then not, and being told if we did stay then the rate would be a crazy $385 a night, this was simply unacceptable.

We stayed at this hotel for 6 nights with 2 teenagers. Although the rooms were nice, I have to mention they were a little small, but typical for NYC. Rooms are also very quite. It isn't a very big hotel, so that is nice. During our stay there was lots of construction going on in front of the hotel (scaffolding in front with jackhammering going on) and also across the street. At times it got loud and annoying in the lobby.( Rooms were fine). This is the flower district so in the mornings it is bustling with activity. Beautiful flowers displayed on the sidewalk. Loved that!
The only meal (sort of ) I had was a bagel one mornng at $7.50 which I thought was pretty ridiculous. There are plenty of bagel shops (Brooklyn Bagels is excellent) or great diners in this neighborhood, so eatting in the hotel is not recommended by me. There is a McDonalds on the corner and a Starbucks in either direction. Secruity is very good. We came in quite late one nite and the outside doors were locked, soon to be opened by the guard/employee in the lobby. Infact, someone is always there greeting you when you come in. Staff is excellent. The business center is very convenient. Internet service in the room was spotty. This was a very good hotel at a good value. I would recommend it and stay here again.
