“Excellent food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2012 via mobile

The food was very very nice and the portions were massive which was great!

Service was really good as well.

There was 4 of us who all had 3 courses, 1 beer each and 2 bottles of wine to share and it came to $560. Not exactly cheap but you do get what you pay for.

“Awesome Atmosphere and Food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 2, 2012

My husband and I stumbled into AJ Maxwells after a long day of sight seeing and shopping. Maxwell's was highly recommended by a delivery man we had asked for directions to a different New York steakhouse. We were not dressed for a nice dinner but Maxwell's welcomed us into their lovely dining room with a warm smile. The food was excellent, as was the wine. My husband had a petit filet and there was nothing petit about it. I had a salad which was fresh and well dressed. We chose the Mac and Cheese, steamed spinach and baked potato as our sides to share. Everything was perfect and I will never have a baked potato that I enjoy as much any where else. We will be going back to Maxwell's when we return to New York.

“Overall we had a good dinner.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2012

We went to AJ Maxwell’s for dinner on a Saturday night during Restaurant Week (the place was a bit empty at 6:30). We received regular menu but we asked the prefix menu, the waiter brought it to us immediately.
Immediately was served a basket of bread that had a variety of about 5 different breads. We ordered a bottle of wine with our dinner (2005 Cerro Anon Rioja Reserva - good wine for the price). After reading both menus we decided to order from the regular menu.
For appetizer we had Tri-Color Salad and Tuna Tartar. Good first course.
For the main course we ordered Porterhouse Steak. The porterhouse for two was perfection on a sizzling plate...cooked medium-rare but still with an amazing char on the outside (there just wasn't enough of $98 - a little expensive).
As a side dishes we had Steamed Broccoli, Steamed Asparagus and Sautéed Mushrooms, good but nothing unusual( 21$ for 3). The sides were served family style to share. We finished our dinner with espresso coffee. Overall we had a good dinner. Definitely is not a cheap place.

“Great food and service, even with a Groupon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2012

Ok, let's get this out there, this is not an inexpensive restaurant. We had a Groupon for a 4 course meal for 2 people. We were brought a bread basket that had a variety of about 5 different breads. Each one was very tasty. We started with a choice of soup or salad. We had the John D special salad. This consisted of chopped tomatoes, peppers, shrimp, onion, bacon with a balsamic vinegar dressing. Excellent first course.. My husband and I both decided on the Filet. We had sautéed spinach, mushrooms and Yukon mashed potatoes. The sides were served family style with enough to share. The potatoes were creamy and oh so wonderful! The Filet was wonderful and each portion was the right amount. We had a choice of several desserts. We picked creme brûlée and Key Lime pie. Excellent desserts! We paid extra for a glass of Montepulciano wine with dinner. We declined coffee, I don't know if it was included, but we don't drink coffee. The service was exceptional! The wait staff was very attentive. We ordered from a special "groupon" menu, but it had a large selection of items I choose from.

“AVOID AT ALL COSTS”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 4, 2012

THIS IS THE WORST RESTAURANT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO IN NYC. I have eaten better food at a mall food court. I wish I could give zero stars, but that wasn't an option. As soon as we indicated we had a Groupon, it was disaster central. We must have been asked 10x if we wanted a cocktail. If we said no the first time, we likely aren't interested. The Groupon is supposed to represent a savings off of normal menu items. If we had known our food would have been child size portions and Grade F "filet" we would NEVER have gone. Additionally, they took it upon themselves to add an automatic tip, as if people that use Groupons have no manners. Last but not least, they charged the card for the Groupon amount (which was already paid)! Absolutely RIDICULOUS. This place should be shut-down. DO NOT GO!!!
