“Loved the tea cups”
Reviewed November 16, 2011

I'd done my research on TA for a night out on the LES and I'm so glad that the Back Room made my list. It's over 25s only at the weekend so bring your ID. Look out for the bouncer standing in front of a gate to steps leading to an alley and tyhen up a fire escape. The bar itself is lovely - it's set up like an old fashioned English drawing room complete with arm chairs and a roaring fire. The drinks are served in decent sized tea cups and are very tasty. The speakeasy style was a fun novelty and I preferred this bar to PDT.

(Whilst you're on Norfolk St head into Nurse Betty's bar next door - a tiny bar but fabulous)

“Cold drinks in hot drink cups”
Reviewed November 12, 2011

Full disclosure - came here when it was snowing and someone had told us there would be hot drinks and a fire. (The drinks were cold and the fire was too somehow.) We also turned up way too early, literally minutes after they opened. The surly staff weren't too happy with that and weren't too keen on serving us. If we had turned up later, after having a few elsewhere, it probably would have been a more enjoyable experience. The cocktails were alright - but the garnish was lame and everything was just in a mug or a tea cup. What's up with that? Anyways, if you love the feel of a nice cold drink in a mug, then this is the place for you!

“loved it!”
Reviewed May 10, 2010

we were with NY natives so innocently followed them along the back alley! the Back Room was a wonderful surprise, lavishly decorated in an old style - suitably dark and quiet. The cocktails come in cups&saucers and the beer in mugs. The cocktails we had were excellent and strong! Would recommend a visit for a bit of fun

“Interesting but fun”
Reviewed December 5, 2009

I went to a private party at The Back Room and it was great. I love the hidden location and the hidden back room of The Back Room. I love the decor and the way the drinks were served. Great place.

“Lots of Fun”
Reviewed November 9, 2009

The Back Room is a unique and fun place. The entrance is hidden and can be easily missed. The decor is made to look like a very plush tea room. Drinks are served on cups and saucers, which just makes the experience a lot of fun. Beer bottles are served with a brown paper bag. The atmosphere is a casual. Not stuck up but not uber laid back either. A nice balance in between. Totally worth a visit!
