Nothing but good things to say about this place, and I stayed here a full week (Sunday to Sunday - the last week of May 2013). The hotel was just renovated in Feb 2013 so the place is pretty much spotless and new, and very nicely appointed. Excellent location in the middle of a quiet (for NYC) side street just two blocks south of Penn Station and one block from the 28th Street subway stop (red/1 line) made it super easy to get around town. From the moment we arrived, the staff were unfailingly polite, helpful, pleasant, hard working, and professional - we were very impressed. The extensive free breakfast was a HUGE bonus every day. The hotel sits back from the road, and a nice bonus was the outdoor seating/patio furniture complete with umbrellas at the front of the hotel.

So please, you spoiled whiners - people giving bad reviews because the (FREE! EXTENSIVE!) breakfast room was crowded?!? Give me a break!

People complaining because the room was "small"?! It's NYC! Every hotel room in NYC is small! It was totally fine, and even had an open-able window. If you want a big hotel room, go stay in Omaha.

I requested and was given a room on an upper floor and stayed the first half of the week in room 1517 (top floor, rear) then moved to 1518 (front), furthest from the elevators. The rooms were quiet and very comfortable and clean. We never waited all that long for the elevators despite the fact that the hotel unfortunately doesn't have service elevators for it's staff - the only, and at that it's minor, negative I can think of to say about this place.

Right at the end of the block (7th) there was a "Fresh" and a "Pret A Manger" - two sandwich/salad shops + an excellent and very reasonably priced sushi shop right on 7th (LZ Sushi) which even delivered. There is a huge Whole Foods about 4 blocks south. So excellent, fairly cheap eats are right on our doorstep if you're on a budget.

So again, this was an EXCELLENT choice for exploring Manhattan, and was relatively reasonably priced (for NYC), to boot. I would stay here again, no question.

Room Tip: I would request a room on an upper floor and away from the elevators, but that's just my preference. Also, rooms in the front, while a tad noisier, have larger windows and more natural light. Rooms at the back face the nearby brick building.

Very convenient location to catch the Bolt Bus to / from Boston. My sisters & I stayed here for 2 nights the end of April. They accommodated our early check - in request, registration was quick & efficient. Lobby has tea / coffee available for free ( nice xtra ) .Other side of lobby was breakfast area.We ate there 1 morning and it was typical but FREE so how can you complain? Coffee was good. Room & bathroom were clean, typically quite small ,not much " closet "space for 3 people to hang up clothes. 2 double beds were comfortable and we did not hear any street noise (16th floor). Some noise from doors closing in the hallway but overall I say good sleep quality. They held our bags on the day we left so we could do more sight-seeing (no charge) . Nice patio area out front to relax or have breakfast when the weather warm. Cabs frequently went down the street so we never had trouble getting one.I am a Priority Club member and tend to stay at their hotels to build up points , but I would recommend this hotel on general principles. I would certainly stay here again!

We love breakfast in any holiday inn express!!!! They have such a great variety that you can eat differents plates each day.
The locstion/price is fantastic, near to everything in Manhattan and you don't have to pay a taxi to get there cause it's only three blocks from Penn Station.
The staff is great and really kind. The rooms are a little small but comfortable.
Definitely we'll comeback in our next trip to New York.

Arrived on the 23rd May at 2.30 pm. Very easy check-in, with very competent and helpful staff. Had requested by phone previous to arrival for a quiet room to the rear of the hotel, this was arranged for us with no fuss. As a family of 4, 2 Adults and 2 teenage boys had read in previous reviews that the rooms were small but on arrival was pleasantly surprised, 2 double beds wardrobe(ok not the biggest) chest of draws and work desk and chair. Very good bathroom with a super shower and plenty of hot water. Internet was very good and never let us down. Office suite on lower ground floor which enabled us to print off boarding passes etc all free to use. The breakfast in the hotel was plentiful with hot and cold choices, from scrambled eggs, omelettes, bacon and sausage to cereals and bagels, the also had a pancake making machine. For me the best was the cinnamon rolls lovely. Also tea and coffee were available 24/7. Great location 20 minute walk from Times Square, 1 block from 28 street subway station and very near to Penn Station. I agree with a previous comment about an improvement that could be made by putting an additional mirror above the work desk, but that's just being picky. All in all great staff, lovely fresh food, Super hotel cant wait to go back.

Room Tip: Try and get a high floor to the rear of the hotel as it quieter.

We booked this hotel last minute, after previously booking a cancelable hotel in Long Island City, and found this Holiday Inn Express on Hotwire secret sale for £126/$196 a night including tax, with breakfast & wifi, for 5 nights (Saturday - Thursday).
I am always a little apprehensive checking in to hotels when the booking was not made directly with them but on arrival at 4.30pm on the Saturday afternoon, check in here was smooth and super fast.
Once we had freshened up & had a coffee in our room, we hit the streets of Manhattan soon after we arrived. We returned to the hotel a few hours later, as coming from the UK & being up for 24 hours at this point we were ready for our bed. We woke at 4.30am the following morning and needed caffeine. As we had used the caffeine coffee in our room the previous night & not wanting to have decaf for our busy day ahead, I popped down to the lobby to take advantage of the 24/7 free coffee.
As promised, the coffee was hot and plentiful.
Breakfast at the hotel was also always hot & plentiful. We had read that it could get very busy & cramped in the breakfast area, with tables being difficult to obtain. As we are early risers anyway & didn't want to waste our precious time in New York lazing in bed, we were usually down for breakfast 6.45-7am and never had an issue finding seating (there are trays available to take breakfast back to your room if required & also bags if you wish to have breakfast "to go"). When we came back downstairs to leave the hotel on a morning around 8.30, the breakfast room was very busy but we'd grab another coffee to go & start that days New York adventure.
The hotels location was great. The 1 train stops at the subway station just a block away at 28th street & most mid-town attractions are within 5-20 minutes walk. As the hotel is between 7th & 8th street there is an abundance of food options close by as well as both a 7/11 & a Duane Reade within a few minutes walk.
The WiFi connection was good and pretty fast most of the time, although it could run a little slower 1st thing on a morning when I'm guessing the rest of the hotel occupants were also trying to log-on.
We were in a room on the 7th floor, facing the street (room 716), and, knowing how small & cramped Manhattan hotels can be, we were more than happy with both the size & location of this room. The only noise we had was the occasional door banging from next door The bed was huge and extremely comfortable, the shower was fantastic and the room was very clean, as was the rest of the hotel. If I had 1 very small criticism it would be to have a mirror over the desk as the 1 behind the door is not in a great place.
Although we didn't have the need for interaction with the hotel reception staff beyond check in & check out, they were very pleasant. The breakfast room & cleaning staff were very friendly and we were always greeted with a hello or good morning.
If we ever return to the wonderful, crazy New York City, I would certainly be looking at booking this hotel again if the price was right.

Room Tip: Make the most of NYC and get breakfast early to avoid disappointment
