This is a fine hotel with much to like. The room is big enough at, perhaps, 250 square feet, consistent with the size of all six rooms on each floor. We enjoyed the design, especially the door separating the entire bathroom (and sink area) from the main room. The microwave and mini-fridge were welcome additions for heating take-out and storing leftovers. The king bed and pillows were great. High-end stuff. Plenty of room lighting via several lamps and a room light. The TV was dated, but they are updating. Here's hoping they add *high-definition* to the cable package (otherwise, why bother with new TVs?)
The free breakfast is fine. We had hot Nescafe, scrambled eggs, instant oatmeal (slow cook would have been nice, but that's a quibble). Many other options were available: fruit, waffles, bagels, etc. Top-notch, like the bed and pillows.
The location is great, but it is an acquired taste. The street is safe, though after dark, the cafe across the street gets a little loud. Not threatening, just loud. The air conditioning was sufficiently loud to provide the white noise we needed to sleep very well.
There is a fine running route if done fairly early in the morning. Go down 34th street to the west end (12th street) to the Hudson Greenway, and head north as far as you please. Round-trip is 1.4 miles plus the distance up the Greenway, at 20 blocks to the mile. (i.e.; 34th to 54th street = 1 mile. 34th to 64th street = 1.5 miles, give or take a smidge.) The hotel has a good weight set, a bike and treadmill in the basement. The treadmill could use a lube, but otherwise everything "works."
There are some wonderful casual restaurants nearby. We enjoyed the Five Napkin on 45th street and 9th avenue (best veggie burgers - beet-based - we've ever had), and Amy's Bread Company on 46th and 9th Avenue for the best cupcakes. Ohhhhh my. (apologies to George Takei).
Bottom line: If you need quiet as the basis of the vacation, the upper-west side would work well. However, if you are comfy being near the hustle and bustle of Herald Square and Times Square, this is a fine choice. Everything, including the theater district and even the museums in the low-80s are within 3 miles walk each way, or a 15-minute subway ride. We will enjoy staying here again.

Room Tip: Get a high floor.

Stayed at the Wingate with two friends. The hotel is in mid town, good location, but if you drove like we did from Burlington, Ontario you will have to park 2 blocks away in a parking garage.
Room was not a bad size for 3 of us to share. Beds were comfortable. The room rate included a breakfast --- served in the restaurant in the lobby. Food was okay, needs to be changed up a bit , boring if you're there for a few days. Wi-fi was a challenge, hit and miss... we discovered upon much trial and error that if you went out to the little lobby area on our floor you could connect.
A bit of a hassle. Also the bathroom fan was annoying, it was connected to the light so no way to turn it off. Noisy!
All in all a good place to stay, reasonable rates especially if sharing and you get breakfast included... which saves time in the morning.
Close to times square, subway and Macy's.

Room Tip: Stay on the second floor if you want to be able to use the internet.

Dear Lolabella_13,

Thank you for taking time to write a review of the Wingate. The garage that we work with Myers Parking is located on 35th street between 8th & 9th avenue 1 block from the Wingate. I am glad you found the location, beds, and breakfast to be good. I am sorry you had challenge with the Wi-Fi we just upgraded the speed of our Internet by adding an additional dedicated fiber line to the hotel last week. We continuously work to stay on track with the ever-changing technology needs of our guests. We hope you give the Wingate another try in the future.

Best wishes,
