Arrived at this hotel for a two night stay in a "deluxe room".
Check in was swift, but was upgraded to executive room. It was small and rather dated, but was able to downgrade my room type to the deluxe room and still keep access to the Executive lounge.
Executive lounge was very different to European versions. Size was the first thing- it was exceedingly large, but with a drawback that it was noisy with lots of families using the lounges, so sitting quietly reading or working was impossible. The lounge does charge for alcoholic drinks, which is very different to European Hiltons.
The deluxe room is tastefully decorated and had a queen sofa bed for extra guests if required. Lavazza coffee maker in room, but with dried creamer instead of half and half.
Bed was exceedingly comfortable with very fancy LCD reading lights.
The shallow American bath has been replaced with a spacious shower cubicle with a monsoon shower head!
During Irene I needed to book a room on a night-for-night basis and the Executive staff at the front desk were exemplary. Special praise should go to Giovanny and Kelly who were exceedingly helpful. They had a lot to put up with checking in evacuees and stranded guests.
I had to change rooms twice during the last part of the stay due to the day-by-day reservation as the airlines reworked schedules. I was offered a corner suite which offered a three window view out to the encroaching hurricane! Very enjoyable to watch as a rookie!
The suite was not as up-to-date as the deluxe room decor but very comfortable too!
I was heartened to see the true Hilton spirit of the staff during the hurricane and cannot praise them enough for their tireless efforts!
Well done staff of Hilton New York, Avenue of the Americas!
