“Nice boutique hotel, great rooms & breakfast”
Reviewed November 9, 2012

SHHI is a great alternative for visitors who want an authentic accommodation asside the mainstream Manhattan hotel complexes. The hotel is in an old victorian townhouse and the big living room makes you feel like you´re visiting a friend.

Room: We stayed in Lena´s Room. Very nice and quiet. I recommend the photos on the homepage. The rooms really are that nice.

Location: Harlem, not what you expect when you hear it. We always had an absolutely save feeling. The neighboughood is not what it used to bee 20 years ago. The A Train takes you to Midtown in 20 minutes (+ 5 minutes walk to the station) This is the only downside of SHHI.

Breakfast: Very good, for a fair price. We payed (I think $7,50 per person) coffee, juice, cerials, eggs, watever you want. Freeshly prepared. The Breakfasttable is served in the livinng room. All the visitors sit together at a big table. Quite nice because you can excange with other visitors and get tips for spots to visit.

We would definitely come again!

The cab from LaGuardia was easy (Saturday) and just $25. The street is quiet and pleasant. We dropped our bags and set out for NY midtown. The owner gave us subway directions and it was easy. He said we would save a lot of time compared to a cab. Coming back we took a cab. The first cab refused but the second, though hesitant, did find the address and dropped us at the door. Then he sped away. We were only staying for the night and then transferring to the Waldorf Astoria (for the same price). The room was spacious and comfortable. There was a kitchen, sofa, bathroom, closet, and safe ($20 deposit, which was returned). Great breakfast prepared by two very pleasant ladies. Cereal, pancakes, bacon, baked breads, fruit, coffee, juice, And more for $7.50. Well worth it - all you can eat. Only negative was the midnight arrival of a family. The stairs creak loudly and there is no elevator. We stayed in Josephine Room - quite comfortable. If you have to or want to be in this area this is an acceptable choice, but if you want to see Times Square and have easy access to attractions and restaurants, I would recommend midtown or SoHo / business area. Save the stress and cost of taxis at night ($20) from midtown to Harlem. If you want fun at night, stay where the action is. You can get a good rate through Priceline or Hotwire. Cheers!

Room Tip: Ask for first or second floor. First is actually second and second is actually third.

Hamilton High in Harlem is today one of the most charming places in Upper Manhattan; here you can find Sugarhill, Jeremy's very original Inn. The place is beautiful and very unique, the furniture and the Ambiente very special. You feel like being in a private home, that's why in my opinion it's not worth rating it like one of most hotels or B&B. Jeremy prepares himself breakfast for all the guests, who sit together at a big table, talking and sharing impressions and advices about visiting and living the city of NY. Jeremy helps you going around as an insider more than as a tourist. It's a big value, something you can't compare with being the room better cleaned or having impersonal comforts. As for all details you can talk with Jeremy and adjust. We are very happy about our choice, it was a very special holiday, and not only 'cause of hurricane Sandy!

WLAN/rete Wireless è gratuita e funzionante. La camera SATCHMO che avevamo è bella grande e con un bagno enorme. Anche se la perfezione qui non è ricercata, tutto funziona. E comunque se avete un piccolo problema Jeremy cercherà di risolverlo.

We have done a lot of travel and many B&B,s throughout the world. Reason for an average review amounted to three reasons, the room booked for and confirmed was not available on arrival and we were relocated to the top floor which proved sometimes difficult going up the very steep staircase.. On arrival which happened to be night time following a 20 hour flight from Australia, we were unable to get into the premises even after we had closely followed Jeremy's instructions on how to locate the key which did not work and needed to stop someone passing to give the owner a call. Luckily, he was still on the premises as his place of residence is elsewhere. We did not have a U.S. phone to call him as we had just arrived in the country. Wifi for Ipad was very poor and most times was not available in this top room. After leaving Sugar Hill we had no further problem with the Wifi.

On the up side, we found the premises quite charming and comfortable. We had a king size bed which was extremely comfortable. Location is good and 10 minute walk to two subways. We felt safe at all times. We only used the breakfast option once which was quite enjoyable along with the meeting of other travelers at that time. Location is reasonably quite with the usual New York siren to remind you of where you are..

Our weeks experience in Harlem was most enjoyable and it was great to live with the locals. I would recommend Sugar Hill Inn, probably suitable for the younger age group.Weather whilst there was cold but comfortable.

Room Tip: Very steep spiral staircase to avoid. Last minute check to host re room requested/confirmation prio...

We stayed at the Convent Ave property. The rooms were spacious, however I do agree with the previous comment about cleanliness of the rooms. I found a hair on my bed, the same hair was in the shower. Overall the property could have been cleaner.. On the positive: Jeremy gave us great advice about seeing the city. My husband and brother in law enjoyed talking with Jeremy. I loved the kitchen, there are plenty of bathrooms. There are plenty of restaurants and grocery stores in the area. We felt safe. Would stay there again

We were travelling with 6 people and stayed at the Victorian Row House. Jeremy's instructions were clear so we found the place and the key no problem. 4 of us stayed in the Malcolm room in the basement and 2 upstairs in the Dizzie Room. If you're booking 4 people in the basement, there isn't much privacy between the two rooms, just a small divider and we put a blanket over top. There is one queen bed and the other is a sofa bed which wasn't super comfortable. It didn't seem like our bedding was cleaned the first night we arrived but after that our room was cleaned every day. The house had a lot of character and the street was quiet. Subway stop was only a couple minutes away and took us down to the main areas easily and pretty quickly using the express trains. Jeremy was super helpful in giving us ideas on what to see and the "not so touristy" options. Overall a pretty good experience, minus the few small things. We would probably stay closer to the city center next time.

Hi everybody, we are a young couple from Milan, we stayed at the Sugar for a week in the middle of September. We can't really understand the bad comments on here. The B&B is clean, all the info about the location and the costs are well described on the website. Of course Jeremy is a singular person but he is nice, and you are always free to choose how an when visit New York, not obliged to follow his advice.
We both think it was good to have breakfast there, the table is really full of homemade biscuits, bread, cereals, milk, tea, fruits and so on, and you can ask Jeremy to prepare something salty like cheese piadina and whatever. It costs 7,50$ per day, but it really is good value considering that after those breakfasts (taken at 9 o' clock) we weren't hungry until 4 pm. Furthermore, we think it is really interesting meet the other people of the B&B, chat with them and tell them our experiences in NYC.
We've rent the bikes for only 25$ for an entire day, it is extremely convenient! Near Central park, for example, they rent bike for 15$ per hour. Jeremy suggested us to reach Central Park through the bicycle path along the river which is really a beautiful panoramic view! Harlem is not a bad district, sometimes we came back home really late in the night, and we always found patrol cars going around the streets and this make you feel protected. Furthermore, we attended to a church service with gospel chorus in the Convent church (near the B&B), that was an amazing experience.
Finally, we want to strike a blow for Jeremy: we didn't have enough time to write down postcards and we thought to write and send them from the airport during the wait, but we found it is not possible (so pay attention and write and mail the postcards before reaching the airport)! Once came back to Italy we sent to Jeremy the package with all our postcard and he kindly mail them from NY!
This is just to say that he was helpfulness even after our staying.
The Sugar is a really good experience, the subway is near, the breakfast is really great, meet new people is a really nice experience, the room was big and clean, the bed comfortable, the bathroom clean and the cost is really low!!
What do you want more from a B&B in New York?!!
Have a great stay in NYC! ;)
