We were visiting our 28 year-old son in NY and wanted to meet on the lower East side for dinner. We tried for Inoteca, but the wait was almost 2 hours (no reservations for parties under 6 people). The neighborhood was mobbed on a Saturday night and we were losing hope of getting in anywhere, till a friend recommended Thor, a restaurant inside a cool new hotel on Rivington. We were a little wary of a restaurant inside a hotel, but were tremendously pleased. Even our son, who generally frequents more underground and alternative-type places, really liked it. We had butternut squash soup, potato gnocchi with wild mushrooms, duck breast in something wonderful, good wines by the glass all around, and the restaurant is stylish, spacious but not dull and generic. The service was excellent and professional. This is a great date restaurant or a place for people who want to visit the Rivington area but don't necessarily want to be crammed in tiny tables with scroungy teen-aged waiters. I know some locals will look askance at this kind of snazzy place in their funky 'hood, but hey, neighborhoods in New York are constantly changing.
