A good time is before sunset as you get best of both worlds.
Wonderful views over the manhattan skyline.
I personally preferred Top the Rock, up the Rockerfella building, than the Empire State. Cost around $45

My husband and I visited New York for the first time last week and decided to visit the observation deck at Rockefeller rather than going up the Empire State Building. It was a great experience! The views were amazing. We walked past on a Thursday afternoon and the line went outside and down the block. We ended up deciding to buy tickets ahead of time and chose a reservation for a Saturday morning, hoping the line wouldn't be as long. We lucked out and within 10 minutes of arriving at Rockefeller, we were up on the observation deck. Was a great experience, would recommend visiting. Would also recommend going in the morning to avoid a terrible line.

We went on Saturday morning about 11.00am. Just walked up and the queue was only 5 people long! The views from the top are superb and well worth the cost. The whole place is one of the prettiest buildings in NY.

Brilliant views across Central Park and the NYC skyline. Very busy but very well organised. Regret not going at night as well. A bonus was the shopping mall underneath with it's ice rink and Ben and Jerrys ice cream!

So it was cold up there and a bit of a faff getting tickets and being back for your precise time slot but worth it. We did world trade observatory a few days earlier so booked this for after dark. Great views over New York and Empire State. No camera tripods allowed but there are handy slots in the safety glass to poke camera lens through. We arrived 20 mins early but security would not let us through until the time so had to walk round the gift shop and buy more stuff we did not really need . Ice skating and nice restaurant when you come back down too.

The weather was perfect and the skyline includes the Empire State Building which makes it worth coming up. For better timing for lighting, come before 2 pm so you’re not struggling with the sun in your photos.

Warning - sunset times start at 2:50 pm, which costs extra. A little early in our opinion but you can’t get around it.

After locating the entrance to the Rockefeller Centre mid morning, making our way in the queue for tickets, we found we had to make a booking for Top of the Rock, which was later that night. As this was some distance from our hotel, we declined. Disappointing. The Empire State Building was much easier to access.

This is a must, if you buy a New York Pass it’s included, go early to avoid long queues. The view from the top is spectacular and you can walk all the way around, you also get to see the Empire State Building. We did this in the day time and Empire State at night, all with New York pass

We did both The Empire State Building and Top of the rock. Top of the rock has the best view but where customer service is concerned Top of the Rock fell very short.

It clearly pays to have a tall building as the amount that is charged is incredibly expensive to ride a lift to the top of a building. We had the New York pass and did it as it was included. The staff who sold the tickets/passes were SO rude. I mean really REALLY rude. Faces like thunder and clearly loving their job. We queued up to get our time slots and saw several people in front of us treated like crap by the girls behind the desks. There really is no excuse for being so unprofessional and sometimes aggressive. If you prefer being treated with respect and welcomed just do the Empire State building.

I wouldn't do this again so if you must have those birds eye photos do it but try and get a deal on price and definitely dont expect a warm welcome
