I have been to the Top of the Rock twice, once a couple years ago in the fall and most recently on July 7th. When I was there a couple years ago we were able to get up to the top fairly quickly and roam around freely. It was a nice experience and the views are obviously awesome.
The problem with the most recent visit is that they just keep sending people up without any regard for overcrowding. On almost every level you were elbow to elbow with people and everyone was of course fighting for a good spot to take photos from and once people go to that spot they pretty much set up camp.
The other problem with this night was a storm was a brewin off in the distance. Once we finally made it to the top the security team began yelling for people to clear the deck. Well, now it was a mob scene trying to get down off the top deck. The lines to get on the elevators to get back down to ground level were longer then an amusement park with a new ride. And, as we were heading down they were of course still sending large groups of people up. Shameful!
None the less, you don’t have many other opportunities to experience views like this. There is the empire state building but word on the street is that the experience there is tight as well. So unless you hit a rooftop bar like they have at the Refinery Hotel I guess you will just have to live with overcrowding.
