My husband and I stayed at the HI Express July 15-17, 2010. We were attending a TODAY show event on the Plaza and I wanted to book a hotel close to the show. We were within 2 blocks of it. The hotel itself is very clean-which is the most important aspect of any hotel for me. Our king bed room was small..it was tight for my husband and I to walk past each other between the foot of the bed and the t.v., however, it was sizable enough for our luggage and a desk and separate sitting chair. The bathroom was normal size. We were in our room so little that this didnt bother us one bit. The hotel is tall, and I believe there are only 6 rooms per floor. So as you can imagine, the rooms are narrow. The breakfast was good, typical for HI Express. However there is not nearly enough seating in the lobby/breakfast area (again-its a very tall narrow building), so both mornings we took our trays up to our room. The service was excellent for us. Our smoke detector beeped a few times on and off so we told this to the front desk and it was fixed almost immediately. We were very pleased with our stay and would consider staying here again.

What else could you want from a hotel in New York ? - great location (a couple of minutes walk from grand Central, Times Square, Rockefeller Centre), clean and tidy, well maintained, air conditioned rooms, good value for money, complimentary breakfast (a rarity in New York).
Ok the rooms aren't huge but we expected that from New York.
Overall the service from reception employees was very good with a couple of minor exceptions (one gentleman wasn't the brightest and one was rude on an occassion).

This hotel was great! It was centrally located, had very clean rooms, and the staff was extraordinarily friendly. They always smiled and offered assistance--one staff member even emptied supplies out of a box for me because I needed some stiff cardboard to transport a picture. The free breakfast was delicious, and had a lot of choices. Yes, the room was small but it was clean and comfortable, and we weren't planning to spend much time there. We were able to leave our bags at the hotel before check-in time and also after we checked out the next morning (so we could spend that day sightseeing). I will definitely stay here again.

The rooms are very very small but the hotel is in a great location - just off 5th avenue.

The complimentary breakfast was great - very tasty...I crave the cinnamon buns! Having free tea / coffee in the lobby all day was also great when you return from a long day of sightseeing.

They also have free internet but the computers & printers rarely work.

It's easy to hail down a taxi and the metro isn't too far.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Holiday Inn from June 19-23. We had a one bedroom suite on the 16th floor.

The room was quite large by New York standards. The bedroom had a king-size bed with a flat screen tv, while the living room had a pull-out couch with another flat screen tv. There was also a small fidge and a microwave in the room, as well. Bathroom was small-ish, but worked just fine for us. The room was always very clean and well appointed with creams, soaps, shampoo, etc. Always plenty of fresh towels.

We found the service was excellent at the hotel. From the front desk staff to the bell boys, everyone was always smiling and willing to help point us in the right direction. The free breakfast was nice too, as there was always eggs, sausage, toast, cereals, etc. The eating area was pretty small, so we just grabbed a tray and ate our breakfast in our room every morning... no big deal.

The location can't be beat. You're a stones throw away from Times Sqaure (about 5 min walk), Fifth Ave shopping, Central Park (10 min), and all the major bus/ subway routes. There are lots of places to eat all around the hotel, so finding a meal was never an issue. We only had to take a cab twice for our entire stay.

Let's be real: while in NYC, the only time you're really in the room is in the mornings and at night before bed. This hotel is a great base for daily adventures around the city. There aren't a lot of fancy frills, but it is more than adequate for a standard visit to NYC.

If you're considering going to the Big Apple and need a clean, friendly place to stay at decent rates, I would definitely recommend checking out the HIE 5th Ave.
