Hotel Central Fifth Avenue New York
Ranked #359 of 471 Hotels in New York City
Reviewed January 5, 2014

Situated just a hundred yards off 5th avenue, and just a ten minute walk from Times Square and a slightly longer stroll to the Empire State Building it's a case of location, location, location and value for money with this hotel especially if this is your first visit to NYC.
We stayed as a family of three (Mum, Dad and teenage son) over the Christmas week and found it ideal for our purposes. It's by no means plush but offers a free cooked breakfast daily and fresh coffee on tap 24 hours and basic but always clean and comfortable rooms (two double beds in the case of our family room). Yes you do have to jostle a bit for your breakfast in the too small lobby eating area (especially between 9-10pm) and seating is at a premium during this period but there's always the option to take your food back to your room. It's an all you can eat/grab what you like buffet and there's decent variety and ample stocks that are regularly replenished - with Christmas morning being the one forgivable exception when things were a little depleted by 9am. And lets not forget here that any breakfast included in your nightly tariff, let alone one offering hot food choices, is a rare thing indeed in any NYC hotel and by our calculations it's a perk that saved us several hundred dollars over our week's stay.
Rooms are small by the standards of any other HI Express we've stayed in - as we expected - but in comparative terms are reasonably sized by budget hotel standards for Manhattan where 'compact' is often taken to an extreme. They are a little dated perhaps but are well kept, clean and do have a bang up to date large flat screen TV and fully functional free Wi-Fi.
Clothing storage space was reasonable for the size of room and the bathroom compact but like the rest of the facilities was serviced daily to a high standard with a generous towel allocation.
We were on a high floor (nineteen out of twenty-two), a blessing in terms of isolation form street noise but it did mean an occasional lengthy wait at peak times for one of the two small lifts.
Note there are no room safe's if this is important to you (though you have your valuables secured in a safe in reception) and no fridge as in other HI Expresses we've used but there are plenty of ice machines spread throughout the building meaning that you can always chill your drinks in the ice bucket or sink as we did.
Worthy of a mention is the free left-luggage service that we used on our day of departure which was operated cheerfully and efficiently by the staff.
Staff deserve a big thumbs up for being generally polite and helpful in a city where this is far from always the case with those working in the service industry!
Overall then a big thumbs up. It's not plush or stylish but it offers a cheap, cheerful and comfortable place to rest your head at the end of a hard day's sightseeing in this noisy, dirty, bustling but vibrant and captivating city that never sleeps. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Choose a high floor to escape street noise but be aware this may mean a slightly lengthy wait for on...

We visited New York between Christmas and New Years so the prices of rooms were outstanding. After shopping around for a little bit we called to get prices and were completely surprised when the clerk told us he could get us a great rate for 3 nights including New Years Eve. We paid less than $1000 dollars for 3 nights nights and stayed just two blocks off Times Square. The hotel lobby is small but gets the job done. Our room was 702. It was pretty small but like I said, we didn't expect much. The room was clean and looked well maintained. The bathroom was small but clean so I was happy with it. There was a stain beside the bed on the carpet. The bed was pretty firm but the pillows were very fluffy so they smashed down flat when you laid on them. Our view was of the side of another building, but we weren't there to have a great view so that's fine. Overall our stay at this hotel was a great value and we were happy with what we paid for.

We stayed at this hotel during 3 nights at the end of the year. As we arrived early in the morning, room wasn´t ready, but they kept our luggage and gave us free breakfast. The hotel has a great location, walking distance to Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue, Times Square....Near subway stations. Rooms are small but is what you expect in NYC, but they are clean with good amenities. Breakfast is included and has a good variety.
There are two computers and a printer in the lower level. The only thing we didn't feel confortable about was the wi fi. We could hardly get online everyday and there were days when we just couldn´t connect. But for the rest, we definitely recommend this property and will stay here again when in NYC.

Room Tip: Higher level rooms I suppose are better as they get lower noise. We were in the 9th floor.

We stayed at this Holiday Inn Express the first week of December 2013. The location is great as far as Times Square, etc. It is a small Holiday Inn Express though. Breakfast was great with a good variety!

Room Tip: Like I stated, the rooms are small but clean. We had a great time.

Make no mistake, this property is NOT located directly in Times Square. If you're familiar with Midtown, this property is about 2 of the "long blocks" walk to the Times Square area. It's at the corner of Fifth Ave and West 45th. A couple of great delis across the street, as well as a tourist shop. Irish pub a few steps away. The property itself houses about 6 rooms per floor, with a two elevator bank system. The lowest level has a computer for guest use that will print a boarding pass. The main street level of the property has a breakfast area - typical HIE breakfast - rather large seating for NYC, but can't possibly accommodate all guests so many people bring their breakfast to their room. My room was comfortable, my stay quiet and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful with directions and other information. This location is an easy walk to anything in Midtown, and about 3 or 4 of the "long blocks" to the main theater district. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Rooms are very small but comfortable. Breakfast was GREAT! Hot items, cold items - and in NYC, for a family of 4 we saved a lot of $$ by having a big breakfast at the hotel. Tip - get up early to get a seat for breakfast. Even on a weekend in December, there was no one eating breakfast at 8:00 a.m. Location is fantastic - easy walk to Rock Center, St. Pat's, Grand Central, Radio City. Another tip - Book the "First Skate" at Rockefeller Center Rink. Starts at 7:00 a.m. - no crowds! Includes hot chocolate. Get on, skate, get off, head back to the hotel for an early breakfast.

The location of this place is just fantastic. You can walk to everything from Times Square to Radio City Music Hall. Just wonderful. They advertised their parking fee at $35/day, but when we arrived with a cross-over vehicle, they jumped the price up to $47/day due to having an "oversized vehicle." Hmmm… Still took up 1 parking spot. Not that big of a vehicle. So that was annoying.

The room was teeny tiny, but we squeezed in. It seemed clean enough. The free breakfast was good and saved us a bundle on food that morning.

We had a good time and would use this hotel again in the future.
