“Friendly staff, amazing location but tiny room!”
Reviewed October 17, 2013

I stayed at the Renaissance with my mother after booking the hotel through a discount website. Of course I knew I wouldn't get an updated room but we were a little shocked at how small our room was! It was clean and the bathroom was ok too (not renovated, but big shower). Good thing we weren't travelling with any kids because there was hardly any space in the room. This is just a warning in case you're booking through a discount website. I know people who pay regular price will get the nice, updated rooms. Not sure if they are bigger though! ;)

The street noise didn't bother me even if I could hear it a little. The hotel itself was very calm.

The fitness center is great. There are several cardio machines (with their own little TV) and plenty of dumbbell so I was able to squeeze a decent workout during my NYC trip.

Anyways, the location is fantastic and there are plenty of stores/restaurants near by. There is a Whole Foods a few blocks away which was convenient to get something to eat in the morning.

The staff is very helpful and one of them helped us find a restaurant after a musical on a sunday night at 9pm when everything seemed to be closed in the area. I can't remember his name but he was the best!! Always smiling and opening the doors for us.

I would go back to this hotel if I'd get a good price. I can deal with the tiny room.

My daughter and I had a lovely time here for 4 nights to celebrate our birthdays. Our room was ready when we arrived at the hotel around noon so we were able to check in early and rest for a bit after being up since 5:00 a.m. and flying in. The staff could not have been more friendly or welcoming throughout our stay. They even sang "Happy Birthday" to us at check-in and sent goodies to the room later. We had two double beds and, while the room was on the smaller side, we had plenty of space for us and our large luggage. I even had room to do yoga beside one of the beds:) The location was great for shopping, museums, and Central Park. The subway is two blocks away and can take you to the 9/11 memorial in about 10-15 minutes! We were on the 9th floor and heard no street noise at all. It was very quiet and we slept well. We had a wonderful time and would definitely stay here again!

The property is quite stylish and very well maintained, and service works fine. Location is wonderful, just a few blocks from the main attractions.

Terrace on top floor has wonderful views of the Chrysler Building, and we were treated with a sunset. Great overall.

Room Tip: We had a junior suite for two adults and a kid, and I think the extra space really made a difference...

Not quite what we were expecting but decent all the same. The lobby was small and it seems there is another lobby area one level up next to the restaurants. This hotel would probably be more suited to a couple rather than a family with a child, I think the dining looked more adult, not family friendly. The room was small but comfortable and all in all it was a good experience. The location is good, close to attractions and restaurants and the staff were all pleasant.

The lobby is quite stylish and understated in browns; very soothing. As with many NYC hotels, the downstairs lobby is small; the 'real' lobby is on the 2nd floor with access to the restaurant (Opia), some oddly shaped but very comfortable chairs, and the elevators to the rooms.

The elevators are small but functional, and the hallways narrow. They hide the central 'courtyard' with sheer curtains, which lend a nice touch. Once at our room, well, as others have said, it was small. We booked a double, which meant one queen bed. There was only enough room for one nightstand, but they put in a shelf under the windows which then wrapped around to the built-in desk. And built-in TV. And built in closets. Total square footage in the room couldn't have been more than about 225-250 square feet, and that included the little hallway from the door past the back wall of the bathroom. We were on the 8th floor, a little set back from the street, so street noise was never an issue. Once we set the air conditioner to the right temperature, we slept well, too.

The bathroom was actually roomy, with a nice, strong, hot shower and lovely amenities. Towels were fluffy, sheets were crisp and clean. At $450/night, we were glad the client was picking up the tab; if we had to pay for a room in NYC, we probably would have shopped around for a better deal.

The restaurant, Opia, served very good food; we were not disappointed with our choices. When we left, they asked if we needed transportation to the airport, when we said yes, we were told they had a car available for $40 flat rate. That's a little more than we would have paid for a medallion cab, but the car was more comfortable, and the driver accommodated our request to stop at two terminals (we were leaving on different airlines).

Room Tip: In NYC-speak, "cozy" means "small." If you're a Marriott frequent traveler...

Green Features: Don't really care. They have the usual blah-blah-blah about leaving the towels in the tub if you want them replaced or on the rack if don't. The shower was a limited-flow showerhead, as most of them are now.

Location, sky loft and terrace rooms, food, service, staff and cleanliness is top notch. So great to sit on private terrace overlooking NYC. Great restaurant. My new go to hotel when in NY. We were in NY for our daughter's wedding along with 23 other rooms and all had nothing but good to say about this hotel and it's amenities

Room Tip: Cozy room small, go for terrace room or carriage house or skyloft room ..worth the extra money

We stayed here for 3 nights. I love Renaissance hotels because it fits our travel style. My husband and I explore the city, and we come back to a clean, comfortable, stylish hotel. It's what you can expect from a Ren hotel. Service is awesome. The lady who checked us in took care of us, and remembered us (well, my husband's quirkiness, anway :) )the next day. I booked one night with Marriott points, and another 2 nights via Priceline. SInce the reservations were two separate room levels, we upgraded the Priceline rooms (to stay in the same room) for a nominal fee. A nice tip for whose who Priceline rooms like I do - do "Name your own Price" when you book, and ask how much for an upgrade once you get there. We got there early, and she accommodated us to check in prior to 3pm check-in time.

We got a great, quiet room at the 10th floor away from the elevators, and/but with a nice view of the south part of Lexington. The best of both worlds for us. You step out of the hotel and everything is at your fingertips. Shops, restaurants, Starbucks, Duane Reade, Bloomingdales, subway are around the corner or one-two blocks away.

Do expect:
Great service. We get greeted each time we walk by the lobby. There's always people by the door. Free water bottle and newspaper.
Clean room. Comfortable bed. Great shower, nice tub/bathroom fixtures.
Stylish lobby. Chiluly designs, great restaurant to have a nice cocktail or two. There's events at the rooftop bar, although we never got a chance to check them out each time.

Do not expect:
Full amenities. It's only a boutique hotel, not a resort. It does have a nice rooftop to take in fresh air and the NYC sights. We had a nice take out lunch there on our last day before heading to the airport. The gym is a good size, though with all of the walking, we never got a chance to use it. There's no pool.
Modern fixtures. It's an old building. It's being updated here and there, but yes, some of the things are old.
Roomy space. It's NYC. Unless you're willing to pay $1K+, it's smaller than the standard 300 sf room most people are used to. So pack light.
Lastly, if you paid Priceline for a room (which is half the price you would normally pay if you reserve through other sites as it is), do not expect to get top-notch room. You will get the most basic room. The best you can do is ask when you check in for a quiet room, if possible. So it pays to be nice to the lady/guy who checks you in.

Bottom line, it's a great, predictable boutique hotel in a prime location, and a comfortable bed to get a good night's sleep after a day of roaming around the town. Mix that up with un-stuffy staff, and it's a great combo for our lifestyle.

We used the Metro for the 4 days we were there for $30 for a 7-day pass and we made use of it. Traffic in NYC can be hell-ish; so cabs/buses could be a nightmare. Weekend train schedules are limited, so keep that in mind. We almost did not make our flight to Newark airport due to rerouting on F train. Next time, I would fly out of LGA or JFK to avoid extra charge from using NJ Transit.
MOMA has free admission on Friday nights. ESB is $39 by one of those street vendors (you get to avoid the purchase line queue this way) nearby with one more admission, so choose Met ($25 or discretionary) or Top of the Rock. We opted for the cruise, but next time, we will do the one where you get to land on Liberty island. The Highline is free, so buy a cheap wine, meats and cheeses and have a nice picnic there. Take the A or C to get to the other side of Brooklyn bridge and walk back to Manhattan in 30 minutes. Picasso's Pizza near WTC is amazing. If you don't have one in your town, check out Chinatown and Little Italy. Soho/Greenwich Village is my favorite part of the city, Bar Pitti's clam pasta is worth coming back to. Uniqlo is like H&M and Target rolled into one. Check out Groupon for restaurant deals. We took the free Ikea ferry to check out Red Hook Winery in Brooklyn. Check out Eataly in Flat Iron district.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor, away from elevator, in the back of 57th Street.
