Overall, the accommodations, the location, the staff, the service and now especially with the addition of Maialino, GPH offers an incredibly effortless, yet sophisticated, almost curated New York experience...near perfection for someone like myself, an ex-New Yorker who returns often and wants the best New York has to offer...and GPH offers a culturally/intellectually nuanced experience presented with a personal depth and the comforts of home.

This lovely old hotel in an excellent neighborhood for walking, shopping and eating. But sadly it has been cheaply remodeled . Like all Shrager Hotels, dim lighting and dark colors substitutes for quality construction standards and falls way way short on service standards. While the afternoon doorman (the only doorman in sight) was helpful hailing cabs, there seemed to be no one to ever help with bags. All the poor travelers I saw struggling down the dark halls with bags was really sad. Nor were there enough people at the check in desk. The elevators are paneled with plastic wood and the lighting in the elevators is so dim, one can't see the buttons or the little slot to insert one's card key. We ordered a cocktail at 10 pm and it took 40 minutes to arrive and the $19 cocktail ended uo costing $37 because of the room service "delivery charge" on top of a service charge and tax! The carpets in the rooms need to either be replaced or seriously shampooed, and the HVAC was noisy and unpredictable. The good points: a LOVELY lobby with the trendier bars in closed rooms off the lobby. That allowed the main space to remain in this large ceilinged room a sense of funky homeyness and an open fire. The sky garden lounge on the top floor for guests only was a sunny haven during the day for work or reading, and the beds were comfortable with great shampoo and soaps in the bathroom. We stay here because it is close to my husband's office and because we grew up at 1 Lexington Avenue, so it feels like home. But truly, this would be a much improved experience with better staff training and some serious money put into maintenance. The dark color scheme is actually lovely, but the spaces need to be lit properly. While the hotel works for us, for $500 a night, there are cleaner, trendier, better located hotels in this town with crisper service, so I am not sure I would recommend this hotel to friends.

Just spent two nights, and sadly, a disappointment.
Positives: nice staff, great lobby and bar, well decorated room.
Negative:
1) so dark its almost a joke. many guests made comments being grateful for the braille on the door. Hallways incredibly underlit.
I could hardly see the numbers inside the elevator.
2) noise a big problem. I complained the first night that the radiator was so noisy, that even with earplugs I couldn't sleep. Nothing was done when I returned the second night. On top of that, room-to-room noise is intolerable, the party down the hall till 340 am meant a second night with no sleep.
3) and finally, a complimentary bottle of northern european mineral water? the seal was broken. Ugh. A refill with who knows what.
This is a big guffaw, without excuse.

A beautiful spot though, and, with good management, more insulation, it could be a place I'd return to. As is, I dont think so.
