“Great Hotel, Bad Situation, Handled with Class!!”
Reviewed January 2, 2012

I stayed at the hotel over this New Years weekend. The hotel is very cool and hip. The situation that some other reviewers spoke about was REALLY bad. It was not a good way to start the New Year and we got into our room finally about 4:30 after getting home around 1:30. The hotel was understaffed for a situation like that to occur, BUT you can't really blame them for that kids of situation occurring. I am not sure they have that in a hotel "what to do" manual. HOWEVER, I will say that the next day the hotel handled the situation with class as you would expect a hotel of this stature to do. The comped the rooms for the night, took care of incidental charges and made the experience a bad incident, not a bad hotel. I WOULD DEFINITELY STAY HERE AGAIN. The restaurant is also amazing!

We just spent two nights at the Gramercy Park and it was amazing - from the front desk, housekeeping staff, bar(s) and roof top restaurant (amazing view and terrific food). Our visits to NY are fairly frequent (I grew up in Connecticut and lived in NYC for three years so it's a homecoming of sorts). We will definitely plan our next (and probably subsequent) trips to include a stay here - it's just enough off the beaten path to have an air of serenity but close enough to take advantage of the midtown madness. Don't miss it!

Room Tip: If you can get a room overlooking Gramercy Park - do it! Lovely.

You can feel the history from the exterior facade of the hotel and the gates to Gramercy Park in front of you. The hotel has embellished this with wonderful interior details, graceful furnishings and rooms with a period feel, but all the conveniences you would seek. The Terrace restaurant upstairs is an oasis. While you feel secluded by the Park, the hotel is so central that going anywhere, uptown or down is simple and quick. We walked everywhere, but short cab rides are always available. The staff was pleasant, efficient and always available. I would not stay anywhere else in Manhattan.

Room Tip: Our room was parkside with a great view. It was sunny and quiet.

First, they had a problem with the elevator FALLING DOWN a few weeks back. Now on New Years eve, they had a computer failure so all room door locks wouldn't work. We had to wait by our doors from 1am to 530am before anyone could let us in our rooms. Families with kids were on the floors of the hallways until 5am! They still don't know what's wrong, so none of us can leave our rooms or we can't get back in. They said they couldn't help us any further. THE PLACE IS COMPLETELY FALLING APART. I'm getting my money back first thing in the morning. Totally ruined New Years. (not to mention that none of the rooms have any closet space.)

Room Tip: Ask for a room with closet space and be careful in the elevators. Or better yet, DON'T STAY HER...

Elizabeth M, General Manager at Gramercy Park Hotel, responded to this review, January 2, 2012
Dear Mike705,
Yes, as you are aware, on New Year’s Eve, at approximately midnight, the hotel experienced a malfunction with our guestroom locks. Every lock went offline and no keys were working, including hotel master keys. Generally hotels have emergency keys locked in a safe in case of a situation like this. We did, but unfortunately these keys did not work either. Around 3AM many guests returned to the hotel and were unable to access their rooms.

Security at the hotel immediately responded to the issue and diligently worked with all guests to remedy the situation. We are working with the manufacturer to determine the exact cause of the issue. At this point we are able to confirm that there was a glitch in the system, and that we were not the only hotel impacted.

Your safety and comfort is our first priority, and we are incredibly sorry for the inconveniences this malfunction caused.

As you know we did our very best to ensure everyone's safety and relative comfort including providing complimentary beverages and refreshment to guests, providing pillows and blanket as our supply allowed, and giving room rate reimbursements as well as future comp stays .

Again we are very sorry, please feel free to contact the hotel directly if you would like to discuss this further.

Sincerely,
Elizabeth Mao
General Manager

Everyone in hotel locked out of room. The staff had no idea what to do. They made us wait in the hallways for one person with a key card to come and unlock rooms. Never stay at this hotel! They have no idea what they are doing!

This hotel is a real surprise what with it being located in the slightly sleepy area of Gramercy Park. Step out of the hotel and you ahv ethe small park on one sode and then a clear view of the Chrysler Building. Empire state and Grand Central no more than a five minute walk and going south the Soho district beckons after a quick stroll.
The hotel itself has fabulous large rooms which are quiet and bathrooms are spacious and products are good. The best bit however is the two bars downstairs which attract a crowd and Mialinos the restaurant which is first class.

Did I mention the Damien Hirst exhibits which decorate the lobby and upstairs breakfast area?

We've been to NYC many times, but hadn't stayed here before. We chose it due to its proximity to the home of a family member who died unexpectedly. The hotel staff did not know why were in the city, yet we were treated like royalty from the time we checked in. We were immediately given an upgraded room, huge by NY standards. The decor is different, medieval and dark, not usually my style, but everything was new and meticulously clean. My only beef is that we had to pay $16 extra per day for wifi. They should just increase the cost of each room by that amount and have wifi available. We will stay there again.

Room Tip: We made an online reservation, paying a little extra for an upgraded room, should one be available...
