Description: One of America's most successful restaurants, this New York steakhouse opened in 1977 and has been a hit ever since. It is one of the most trafficked restaurants in New York City and among the most celebrated steakhouses in the world. Specializing in fresh seafood and lobster and assorted steaks and chops, Smith & Wollensky is well recognized for its healthy portions, seasoned service staff and pop Americana ambience. The painted wood exterior is dark forest green trim on sparkling white, with latticework trim. The elegant interior has turn-of-the-century appeal and design elements including shining brass, dark wood accents and polished wood floors. Adjacent to Smith & Wollensky's is Wollensky's Grill. The Grill (entrance on 49th St) is open from 11:30AM till 2:00AM but does not accept reservations.

“Overpriced,Over-populated, underdelivered”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

I have wanted to visit this place for a long long time so on my first trip to NYC last month I booked a table for my first night. What a disappointment!

I don't know what exactly I was expecting but the restaurant was very busy. We were seated upstairs and all of the tables were in close proximity to each other and we didn't feel like we had walked into anywhere special.

The steak was good.not very good and certainly not excellent. The portion size was good also, but so it should be for the price. Sides are also very steeply priced. I paid upwards of $10 for sauteed spinach which was easily a 1000% mark up.

The waiter was also ok, not good, and not great. He didn't seem to pay us much attention and had a bit of a know it all attitude.

All in all I paid over $200 for 2 steaks a few sides,a bottle of wine and a glass of beer. We didn't have a dessert as they were huge but pointlessly so, they didn't look appetising, and as with the other courses they were presented in a very 1990's manner. I left feeling robbed. The restaurant isn't special, neither is the food, neither is the service. There are much better places to eat in the city for similar or even less money.

“The real McCoy”
Reviewed March 23, 2014

This is one of many steak houses in New York, but this seems to be the real thing that the rest try to imitate. No young brash servers here, just old ones. Nothing done by half measures, even the doubles are doubled. The kind of place that you are proud to have your name on a brass plaque next to "your" table.

“Total genius”

Brilliant service and food. As I was dining alone, I went to the bar to eat. Fantastic and attentive service, a delicious steak and good wine. Can't fault it in any way.

“Excellent Service and Fare”
Reviewed March 20, 2014

The service was impeccable, just as the food. And cocktails are mixed perfectly by the bartender. The price is steep, but you truly get what you pay for. This is the perfect experience for out-of-town business clients.

“Great steaks”
Reviewed March 20, 2014 via mobile

Always visit this place when I'm in New York. It's not cheap but you won't get better steaks anywhere so from that point of view it's good value. The service is great and they have an amazing wine list to suit all budgets. I had a rib steak on the bone washed down with a beautiful bottle of Cabernet. Then had the best Irish coffee ever made by Kieran the batman. This place is a proper old New York stake house with a great city buzz. It's a must visit if your in the big apple.
