“Pretty Good Food - Little Atmosphere”
Reviewed May 23, 2012

We just randomly happened upon the place while visiting China Town recently. I didn't even know the place existed.

We thought the food was okay. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't the best. I'm not sure I'd eat here again. The staff was not rude to us but they weren't exactly fawning over us. Service seemed a little slow.

The menu is a little different. Don't expect the same ole Chinese dishes that you get at your local takeout. We had ginger and garlic tilapia and garlic shrimp. The shrimp are large and they gave you plenty of them but they were slightly overcooked. The rice was hard, like it was the bottom of the pot. The tilapia was great. We also had seafood pancakes but they were basically these fried hard doughy things with seafood flavouring.

The atmosphere and decor are pretty bland. The seat I had was cracked and the old plastic scratched up my legs. I know that in NYC, a lot of places don't offer bathrooms for non-paying customers but an 11 year old kid came in and they absolutely would not allow him to use the bathroom. The place was not crowded so I don't know why they were so adamant. It was obvious the kid was a tourist and not some annoying street urchin.

At any rate, it'll do in a pinch but I'm sure there are better places in China Town.

“Chinese restaurant in China Town, only for tourists ??”
Reviewed January 23, 2012

Several chinese restaurants in Chinatown look worse, but the food is surely better.
I was afraid when I sit down and look around, because there were almost no chinese in the room.
The average quality of the food is not interesting.
Everything seems industrial.

“Don't Waste Your Time”
Reviewed December 9, 2011

This is one of the worst Chinese restaurants that we have ever been to; the food is horrible and the service is weak. All I have to say is don't waste your time and money here.

“Excellent Shanghai cuisine”
Reviewed November 23, 2011

We tried Shanghai Cuisine on the recommendation of our hotel as it was close by, and we are glad we did. While nothing in particular to look at it had great ambiance and friendly staff.
Little pork & crab steamed dumplings had soup inside them - you pierce the dumpling and mix what comes out with a dip - and were absolutely gorgeous. The chicken with dried red chilli and peanuts was hot but superbly tasty. Also had a selection of Chinese beers.

“Absolutely NO”
Reviewed October 9, 2011

I'd heard about the rude service, so wasn't expecting much in that realm, but didn't think it would be THIS bad. When you enter, the man at front desk, looks through you and motions you to a broken table at the back. The someone else came along and said 'why don't you move to this table by the window.' Suddenly, two Chinese customers, men, come in the door, and we are told, 'no, this is for them' after we sat down already and were starting. it was worse than a Seinfeld episode. The men customers just stood there and stared at us, and waited for us to move. We said 'no, we're already here' and they insisted, in broken English and extremely rude manner, nasty, angry. All agreed that the way it was handled was over-the-top rude and not okay, and smacked a little bit of discriminatory preference. We might be wrong on that, but that's certainly what it felt like, and if that's what several customers felt, it's not a good thing. The prices aren't that good, actually. Not the 'low' prices of most great Chinatown restaurants. The table-clothes are badly stained, chairs broken, carpet stained, and well, we already said what we think of the service. So we walked across the street and had a great meal. It's Chinatown. There's more than one restaurant to choose from. Not this one.
