Two floors of well curated exhibitions - on this occasion the one downstairs on queer fashion was particularly good. Much recommended, though the entrance is not particularly welcoming.

Staying around the corner (Hotel Indigo) in December, we stopped in to check out the special exhibit, A Queer History of Fashion, and a thematic exhibit, Trend-ology. Pros: Free admission, fabulous clothes, a fun stop in the neighborhood, especially on a snowy day. The museum director, Valerie Steele, is a serious scholar. Cons: Looking at clothes on mannequins--not enthralling for everyone; the Trend-ology exhibit seemed like an ad for various designers.

Beautiful little museum with great shows on history of fashion. The upstairs gallery is smaller and generally has shows dealing with one aspect of the history of fashion: influences, trends, evolution of some features, etc. The downstairs gallery is larger with more ambitious shows. Recent ones have included: contemporary fashion of Japan, the gothic, shoe designers, queer history of fashion. Since this museum is part of a fashion school, the items are displayed so you can see the construction and details. The museum has generous opening hours (though not open on Sundays) and is free. While shows in the upper gallery, and many shows in the lower gallery, do not have a catalog, there is always a free brochure with a couple of nice illustrations - for free.

The Museum at Fashion Institute of Technology typically shows both permanent collection and exhibitions. Expect to find excellent exhibitions related to 20th century fashion.

No cost but see both floors. Main floor has permanent exhibit. Lower level has a exhibit that changes seasonally. Currently showing queer history of fashion shoe exhibit ended.
