“Sit back and relax before retail shopping”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2013

It is full of tourists, mainly on the way to Macys which is outside it. We were lucky to find a table, and sat down to have a snack and drink before we entered Macys. There was people watching and even some music.

“Crowded, dirty tourist trap”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

Herald Square is awful. It's always jam packed with aggressive tourists. The streets and sidewalk dirty. None of the nearby shops or eating establishments are worth your time, unless you want a quick, greasy bite. Avoid it if you can!

“One of NYC's great squares for relaxing and people watching”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2013

Herald Square is where Broadway intersects with Sixth Avenue. It has been synonymous with clothes shopping forever due to the fact that Macy's Department Store's flagship is right there, facing onto the square. And of course many other big national chains like H&M and Victoria's Secret also have stores there too.

But the thing that draws me to Herald Square is the Square itself. It is two triangles really in between the two crossing streets, an oasis of green looked over by the statue of Horace Greeley, the great 19th century newspaper editor who popularized the phrase "Go west, young man!" There was a time when I had rehearsals in the area, and I would often arrive early with a sandwich or a bowl of food and sit at one of the metal tables within the square and have a nosh and watch all the people go by.

More recently, I have used the square as a fulcrum for getting from one place to another. Two great subway lines, the orange BDF lines and the yellow NRQ lines, stop at Herald Square, and from the lower entrance of the subway station, at 32nd Street, you can walk west one block and be right in Penn Station. I have often found it the easiest and quickest way to get to the train station. There is also a kiosk at that end of the square that sells beverages and sandwiches and snacks.

“Relax and people watch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 23, 2013 via mobile

If the weather is nice this is a great area to sit back and people watch. Go to Pax deli and get take out coffee and cupcakes and enjoy watching the shoppers. Then head into Macys for retail therapy.
