Sure it's free, but this is the worst thing we did in 10 days in New York. First of all, we could not see a thing, too much equipment in the way. took 4 hours, of which you see Letterman maybe 20 minutes. Music is so loud I had to plug my ears. If you absolutely love Letterman and are willing to be treated like cattle for 4 hours, go for it.

THis was fun all around. We had put our names in "on line" to be chosen for the show. The show called after our vacation had started, but we were easily able to fit in a couple of nights in NYC. Historic theater, great atmosphere. It is important to know you will spend about 4 hours in all when you attend the Letterman Show. They have you come early to check your identification, then send you away for an hour, then you come back about an hour before the show. Well worth the "passive kidnapping" as Dave would say.

Great staff, lots of fun. Be prepared to stand in line. If you sit in the balcony you can use restrooms at commercial breaks. It is chilly so bring a sweater.

We have been trying to get tickets for the Letterman taping for years. Finally, on this recent trip to NYC we were fortunate to get picked.
If you jump through the hoops, listen to the spiel and bear the waiting around it's worth the experience to see a live taping. The staff are all very friendly and upbeat and want you to be the same as we have been almost ordered to laugh at everything Dave says. Aside from us all being herded like sheep I still found the whole process interesting. Sometimes it was not easy to see Letterman as the cameraman, equipment and lights were in the way. There are TV's strategically placed so you see what's going on.
The theatre itself is architecturally interesting (look at the facade) with a lot of the old features still in tact. Unfortunately, it looks like they have painted the ceiling of the of foyer white and covered the original surface.

Sure it's fun, but to see Letterman for an hour you'll spend three hours being herded like cattle.
