I spent the day at Roosevelt Island, we took the Tram which was charming and made the little trip more interesting, there you can have a coffee, eat something or just appreciate the view of NYC, very amazing, calm, and stunning beauty of the city.
I highly recommend ..

There are very few views of the Manhattan Skyline as great as the one you get from the Roosevelt Island Tram. This is a must do if you are in the area. Even if you don't have a metrocard it is worth every cent of the $9 fee. Roosevelt Island itself also has some amazing views. from the southern tip you see the Brooklyn Bridge & the new freedom tower as well as all of the Manhattan skyline on the banks of the river.

If you are near the tram station and have some time take a ride. It takes the subway metro card. The other side doesn't have any tourist type stuff so it's really just for the ride and stunning views. Avoid the typical rush hours as locals use this for transportation home/work etc. I'm glad I took a ride for the experience.

We attempted to go on the Roosevelt tram the first day that we arrived in New York and had a nightmare with the ticket machine. We only had a $20 dollar bill and the machines only allow you to purchase one ticket at a time and do not give change. Also there was no one at all on the station to assist so we had to forget on this day, which was rather irritating and frustrating.
After a couple of days we decided to give it another go. By this time we had already bought a Metrocard so we made sure that this was topped up before going. The trip over to Roosevelt Island and back is really great with fabulous views. We also enjoyed a walk along by the river where we got excellent views of Manhattan. So we recommend this but score a 3 due to the hassle the first time we tried. The views and experience score a 4.

Up at the crack of dawn thanks to jet lag we headed straight up to the tram (cable car) after breakfast. An easy subway ride from Bryant Park to 59th and 3rd left us with a short walk to the tram terminal. It left almost immediately and provided views to downtown Manhattan, the adjacent Queensboro Bridge and Roosevelt Island. After a stroll around the parks at the southern tip of Roosevelt Island we enjoyed a sunnier trip in the return direction. A nice way to start the day which also kept our 6 year old son entertained. As we had 7 day Metropasses we didn't have to spend anything extra. Without the walk this could be done in under an hour.
