“Fantastic as expected”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2013 via mobile

This was our second visit to cafe wha and it was still fab. We enjoyed the first one 2 years ago and wanted to go again as we had such a great time. We visited on a Sunday which had the house band on. There is no cover charge on this night. Some of the band had changed but they were just amazing playing a huge choice of music ranging from decades ago to modern. This night did seem to tail off at the end and take a slower tempo which was a bit of a disappointment. But by far one of the best entertainment spots in new york. We also got good which was not amazing but good quality and reasonable.

“best house band ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2013

Cafe Wha? is always, always a good time. There's no cover Sunday nights, but it's totally worth the price of cover (around $5-15) the rest of the weekend. Drinks aren't cheap, so be ready to spend a few bucks, but the dancing is great, the music is incredible, and the atmosphere is unlike anywhere else.

“Fun! But do Beware”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2013

Have been aware of Café Wha? for decades.
Bot not being much of a live music fan, I’d never gone.
Wound up going because it was where a friend wanted to go for his Bday.
We were very pleasantly surprised.
The music was fantastic! All familiar, hit songs that ranged from songs currently on the radio to as far back as the 70s. All VERY well done.
Not the usual type of bar band that can make you hate even your favorite songs.

The energy in the place was great. Not tons of room to dance. But the patrons were all in a good mood and so even with a small space, there were probably a couple dozen ladies dancing.
Their ages ranged from 20s to 60s. It was fun for all.

While waiting for the live entertainment, we enjoyed some really fun music videos from days gone by.
After that, the show opened with a very good (and well-known) stand-up comic. Nice bonus.

$15 cover and 1-drink minimum is definitely not too much to ask for 2 hours of entertainment.
It’s not much more than the cost of a movie!

All that being said, I must also make you aware of the less than fun aspects as well.
The place is owned by the same people who own the Comedy Cellar, next door.
Their practices have always been unpleasant.
For one, they will stuff as many people into the place (and at each table) that they possibly can.
Don’t know if they are exceeding safety code. But certainly exceeding people’s comfort level.
Another uncomfortable aspect is the poor condition of the seats and tables.
They will rock and roll until you are sea sick.

And they have a super-sleazy practice of calculating the gratuity (which they put on the bill since we were a party of 5) on the entire bill. Drinks were $55 (quite high enough for 5 people who each had 1 drink) and admission was $75. They based the tip on the entire $130!

It’s wrong and can definitely be unpleasant finish to an otherwise fun evening.
We didn’t dispute it because it would have ruined the mood.

But if we go back (and if you go) definitely have to pay for the tickets on the way in rather than having them added to the bill where they’ll charge you gratuity on it!

“Great night”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

Hard to find places with such good music in an intimate atmosphere at such a cheap price. Amazing music, service and a fun night out especially if you're up for a bit of dancing in the aisles!! Happily drink and dance the night away here.
