That Michelin star they boast about? That was years ago, with a chef who has moved on, and a different staff. This was once the best Indian restaurant on New York. Today it's an outright ripoff.
We had an atrocious experience. After a long night of nearly no service (I had to chase down the host to order a beer, because no one came to our table for over 30 minutes!) the general manager had the nerve to tell us that he "we're very busy so we need your table", i.e., leave. He said this while we still had our dessert menus in front of us and were waiting for someone to come take our order, exactly 2 hours after we started eating. If Devi has a time limit on their reservations they need to do 2 things:

1. State it explicitly when making a reservation
2. Hire competent waitstaff,

This was by far the worse service experience I've ever had; it ruined our evening and embarrassed us in front of our guests. The food was actually decent, though very timid for Indian food. It looked Indian, but certainly didn't taste it. The breads were horrendous. And we never got the chance to try the deserts. Devi was great, many years ago, but it is now simply a ripoff living on its former glory - and it's very, very expensive for the quality. Avoid.

Im from Vancouver, home of the best Indian food -Vij's. But this is a definite equal to it! I was delighted to find it and look forward too my next visit.

Walking in I was impressed... The ambiance was warm and kind of sensual. However, when the food came, and they came very slow - I was just disappointed. The food wasn't really bad, but it wasn't good either. But for the price i was expecting a lot more. From the taste, to the portion size, to the slowness of service, to menu selection... this restaurant has nothing to offer but ambiance and that's it. I think they had only 4 or 5 desert choices of which 2 were unavailable at the time I was there. As pretty as it is inside, its not worth your money.

Skimming over some of the other reviews I noted that several others used the word 'eclectic' and I think that is especially apt. If you're a strict purist for Indian cuisine you should probably just go elsewhere and try one of the many excellent Indian restaurants in NYC but Devi is more for the adventurous Indian food enthusiast. The flavors of India are all there but they are combined with oftimes odd ingredients that you would not expect on an Indian menu...take the Paneer Bhurjee Tacos featuring paneer, onions, tomatoes, peppers and guacamole...odd but delicious, or the Salmon and Crab Croquettes with a green chili aoili, also non-traditional but yummy. We also tried the Manchurian Cauliflower and really enjoyed that. The menu also includes many of the traditional Inidian dishes like samosas, tikka masala and goat biryaani so its fun to mix and match between the traditional and eclectic dishes. Everything is well prepared and seasoned though, and the staff are friendly and helpful, definitely worth a try. They also offer a half price weekend brunch where you get half price off your entire check which is a fantastic deal.

The food was quite interesting at this unique Indian restaurant. The highlight, and don't miss it, was the tandoori lamb chops. Service is fast, and the noise level okay, better on the mezzanine. Wine list was barely passable.
