We stopped in at Dervish on a long weekend trip to New York. It had been recommended by friends who visited the restaurant a couple of months previously. We thought the food was very good, and the service excellent. It's not cheap, but not outrageously-priced either. The decor isn't fancy, and it's a little hidden away, but is conveniently located to the theater district. We enjoy Greek, Bulgarian, and Turkish cuisine, and can say we had a very good experience here.

We've enjoyed pre-theatre dinig at Dervish for many years and it has never let us down. The food, the service, the seating and comfort and the value are all first rate. Granted, the decor lacks the cutting edginess of a Milano-inspired designer-resto or the strained fakery of a carefully planned "ethnic" eatery, but understatement and a relatively unadorned classic approach are features of Turkish cookery. Dervish has three main dining areas: the front, with a long bar, booths and some tall tables, a more formal dining area at the rear and an additional upstairs room. Turkish dishes are anything but complex or contrived; with that out of the way we can attest to having greatly enjoyed, among other dishes, the satiny cacik and equally silky Lebni yogurt-based appetizers, as well as the Imam Bayildi (stuffed eggplant) and the spiced octopus. Among main courses we keep coming back to a subtly spiced Lamb Adana, the grilled lamb chops and the mild Manti (Turkish mini-ravioli). Plus: the noise level is acceptable, the wine and liquour lineup more than acceptable and the service has always been courteous and prompt.

The pre dinner drinks were nice except they had run out of tanqueri (sp?) and limes. The bar man was friendly and the ambience was nice. Dinner was Ok but service was a little slow - a little dissapointed.
