“Great neighborhood Tuscan”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 23, 2011

Wonderful Tuscan Italian. Caeser salad was very good, even though it was not prepared tableside, as advertised on the menu. The mussels appetizer was also excellent. The pastas are offered in appetizer size orders. The bolonegse and the cavatelli were very good and came to the table steaming hot, a big plus. They also have an excellent chianti by the glass.

“Pretty street, pretty brownstone, and pretty disappointing!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2011

We've tried it three times - it's practically a neighbor. The first time we actually sent back the food. The next two times were slightly less than average. It's got such a charming European atmosphere on one of nyc's prettiest streets - but go elsewhere - or have a glass of wine outside when the weather is good.

“Bad service, didn't actually get to eat dinner”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 20, 2011

My husband and I made a reservation to have dinner here for our 1 year wedding anniversary. After they seated us in a tight corner (in a nearly empty dining room), we waited for 10-15 minutes before we were approached with menus and water. I requested a gluten free menu, we waited for another 15 minutes and the waiter never came back, so we got up and left and had a wonderful dinner at another restaurant close by. I've never encountered such poor service in a supposed upscale restaurant, or any restaurant for that matter. Pathetic.

“Fair to good food but unacceptable service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2011

Hard to get waiters attention despite 140$+ meal except when bill was served with coffee.then saw several waiters each asking if we were ready to pay! The worst part was serving us regular coffee when decaf was requested. Waiter even confirmed it was decaf when brought to table...lazy?sloppy? Or just uncaring? It does not matter it was unacceptable and one of those things you don't find out about until later.

“It is hard to believe that an established restaurant in a prime location can get away serving substandard food”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2011

Lumi is an attractive restaurant in an enviable location. The waiters generally try quite hard and provide adequate if not exceptional service. There is only one problem -- the quality of their food. It is hard to believe that in the heart of New York City there can be a restaurant serving this type of "Italian food" and get away with it. I ordered split pea soup, which turned to be a very light green thin watery, tasteless fluid with a few whole peas swimming in it. Next i had chicken scarpariello, a dish I greatly enjoyed in other Italian restaurants in New York. It can be a delicious meal with chunks of chicken rapidly browned in a skillet, sometimes cooked with pieces of sausage added to it and always prepared with fresh garlic. Lumi's version consisted of three whole chicken legs (certainly enough to eat!), seemingly boiled and covered with a thick tomato sauce, served with potatoes and broccoli! Revolting. My friend ordered risotto whose only resemblance with the real thing was that it contained rice. But the rice was boiled and then had some pieces of vegetable added to it. The only acceptable part of the meal were the ice creams. Unless the restaurant puts its act together it is not likely to survive for much longer. We noticed that unlike neighboring restaurants the Lumi dining was almost empty by 8:30 pm.
