Description: Shortly after the original Sant Ambroeus opened its doors in Milan in 1936, a devoted following emerged. This celebrated pasticceria and confetteria became the meeting place for the local intelligentsia, whether beginning their day with Sant Ambroeus’s legendary cappuccino and cornetto, savoring panini at lunch, or spending their evening enjoying refined cuisine in the restaurant’s elegant dining room. We translated these old-world sensibilities of Sant Ambroeus to modern times, and imported our rich culinary traditions to New York. Each of our restaurants remains authentic to our Milanese origins, and we continue to serve our culturally inspired delectables in a casual yet elegant environment.

Good Italian neighborhood restaurant on the UES. Prices high for the quality. Service, food and setting are average.

I first visited Sant Ambroeus while I was still in college. I returned with my wife and kids 28 years later and it's still as attractive, elegant and tasty as it was then. We visited for coffees, hot chocolate and desserts over Christmas vacation after a day at the nearby Metropolitan Museum of Art. Service was superb and the food and drinks were excellent. The bill for 5 exceeded $90 including tip but it was truely an experience to remember again and again. We strongly recommend it and will return on another special visit to Manhattan.

We had our best coffee in New York here. Worth it for that alone. A word of warning, the breakfast basket thing on the menu is enormous. Enough for probably 3 people in our view. The first time we went in we were not warned and we ordered way way too much!

This has long been my favorite cafe in Manhattan. If you lust for an espresso drink from the large American chain coffee house this is not your place.
Ambroeus has the look and taste of a high-end cafe in Rome or Milan. This is a place to savor a delicious espresso, brioche, pastry or little sandwich any time of day. Like in Italy it has tables but many patrons line up at the always busy coffee bar where an afternoon aperitif is also available.
The cafe includes an excellent retail bakery and chocolate shop and a restaurant for supper, all excellent.
Yes, prices are high but considering the excellence of the food and drink, the location and the fact that their monthly rent probably exceeds the value of most single family homes in the US, it is a bargain.

I have been a fan of their gelato for ages. We finally went for dinner. It is the sort of place where you have professional waiters: men in their 50s and 60s that have done this for a living. The food was excellent. I had asparagus with chopped hard boiled egg and a filet. Both were wonderful. For dessert some cookies and gelato. The only caveat is that it is not a place to go if you are looking for good value. It is quite expensive, but a nice neighborhood place to go if you want to treat yourself.
