Description: Shortly after the original Sant Ambroeus opened its doors in Milan in 1936, a devoted following emerged. This celebrated pasticceria and confetteria became the meeting place for the local intelligentsia, whether beginning their day with Sant Ambroeus’s legendary cappuccino and cornetto, savoring panini at lunch, or spending their evening enjoying refined cuisine in the restaurant’s elegant dining room. We translated these old-world sensibilities of Sant Ambroeus to modern times, and imported our rich culinary traditions to New York. Each of our restaurants remains authentic to our Milanese origins, and we continue to serve our culturally inspired delectables in a casual yet elegant environment.

“Old school”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 9, 2012 via mobile

I have been a fan of their gelato for ages. We finally went for dinner. It is the sort of place where you have professional waiters: men in their 50s and 60s that have done this for a living. The food was excellent. I had asparagus with chopped hard boiled egg and a filet. Both were wonderful. For dessert some cookies and gelato. The only caveat is that it is not a place to go if you are looking for good value. It is quite expensive, but a nice neighborhood place to go if you want to treat yourself.

“Italian Gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2012

The food is very good and the service is impeccable, the atmosphere is bussleling We were seated at a nice table in the back. To start they offer you a choice of 3 different breads. I chose all of them but the sunflower seed is great. They have a very good Italian wine list as well as good quality wines by the glass. I eat here every time my wife and I travel to NYC. I usually order their seafood special which never disappoints. My dish was heavenly! This a great resturant for a late lunch - believe me - after this meal you will be able to skip dinner. We have tried many Italian resturants in NYC and I keep coming back to this one for their authenticity, wine and atmosphere. Don't leave without buying some cookies for the walk back to the hotel!

“An Italian Gem on Madison Avenue”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 23, 2012 via mobile

The food is delicious----small portions but certainly more appropriate for the savvy diner---and expensive. This is New York and Madison Avenue, so one should not be surprised. Excellent choices for lunch and dinners, wonderful small sandwiches for a snack with a quick coffee or a glass of wine, and the gelato is the best outside of Italy!
The staff can be a bit off putting but perhaps that is because the clientele runs the gamut from wealthy to super wealthy locals, theater moguls, and Europeans looking for a taste of home...they won't be disappointed.
Suggestion: dress up, you will be treated better and you will feel that you belong in this upscale eatery!

“A Milan like cafe in the middle of Manhattan.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2012 via mobile

From drinking a coffee at the bar to having a meal in the dining room the atmosphere and food is purely Italian.
Great menu and a delicious cappuccino.
Highly recommend it for lunch or an afternoon coffee.

“excellent food, not so great staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2012

My friend and I wanted to stop by Sant Ambroeus on our way to Guggenheim to have desserts. The waitress told us that we can not sit down if we just wanted to have desserts. It wasn't even lunch time--it was around 3-4pm, so I don't know why she said that. She told us that we should eat at the bar, but the bar didn't have any chairs, so we just decided to have lunch and sit down. The food was great, the atmosphere was nice, but the service wasn't good...
