I visited right after the first section had opened in 2009 and came back last week for a second look and the park is even better. The gardens are filling in nicely and are very well maintained and the crowds strolling are more relaxed and playful. This is one of my favorite places in New York now.

An old rail line at first floor level that meanders through Manhattan. Great way to spend a few hours. The line has been converted into a walkway and there are many small cafes, ice cream sellers, art exhibits and seats etc along the route.

This is how you take an old infrastructure facility which is not in use anymore and turn it into a lovely tourist attracion in the heart of NYC.

If you are looking for cheap / free activities to do, this is a must.
It's very unique, and allows you to indulge on the urban landscape from a different perspective.
We really enjoyed doing this walk in the middle of the city.
I highly recommend you do it early in the morning, not as hot :)

This place is getting overrated. Avoid it on weekends. There's a beautiful amphitheatre where 10th Avenue begins. It's close to the food vendors where you can get an Ice Cream Sandwich from Melt or some briskets from Delaney's.
