I stayed at the Vanderbuilt YMCA and found a very nice French restaurant and bakery for breakfast. It has a wide variety of excellent baked goods and delicious oatmeal with berries. Called Le Pain Quotidien, it is around the corner and a few blocks from the "Y" at 937 2nd Avenue. Coffee is served in a bowl and at first I thought I was being served soup. It has outdoor seating; I went there for breakfast every morning and one night I stopped for a glass of wine that was $5--very good for NY prices. It was interesting to sit there and watch the parade of New Yorkers go by. It seemed to me it was a place frequented by "locals," and the waiter confirmed this. When you exit the "Y," turn right, then make the first left and the restaurant is on the left about two blocks.

As a solo traveller, I appreciated the large tables with family style seating. I've been to several Le Pains and enjoyed all of them.

A perfect place if you like it casual, fresh, healthy, a little unusual. There is a choice of small tables for a few people or a long communal-like sitting. We had curry chicken salad sandwich, smoked salmon sandwich and quinoa tabouleh salad. Good size portions for a lunch, wonderful breads, all greens and herbs look and taste straight from the garden. Everything is interesting, even the sweetener is Agave syrup - terrific flavor. Unfortunately, we did not have time to have deserts - they looked really irresistible.

While visiting Soho, wetried for breakfast the pain quotidien.
The restaurant has a huge table in the middle of the room were differnt people are sitting together having breakfast. The whole bakery has a very bohemien and cozy atmosphere and was inviting. We ordered a bread basket with coffee and the first in New York I was not completely owerwhelmed with a huge and way to big breakfast.
The coffee was excellent and the service was great.
