Description: Opened in 1980, La Ripaille is one of the oldest restaurants in West Village. Some of the regulars have been coming for as long as 25 years. We want everyone to feel welcome here, whether it’s the celebrities who frequent, the children for whom we provide games & crayons, or the people who live in the Village. The owner, Alain Laurent, is integral in the day-to-day processes of La Ripaille. He daily scours the market for the freshest produce, often choosing the day’s specials based on his finds. This keeps the specials seasonal & unique. He decorates the ever changing wine list with the best wines available. The restaurant itself is beautiful, with a terrace for the summer & a fireplace in the back for the winter. The candlelit tables light up French posters and paintings & fresh flowers decorate each table. For a taste of history and delicious French cuisine, visit La Ripaille. We have a seat just for you.

“charming, romantic evening”
Reviewed April 30, 2007

My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by this charming little getaway in Greenwich Village. We are rarely afforded a quiet and relaxing night out and this turned out to be the perfect place. We were geeted by the "tres gentile" patron, who described the specials in detail and made some wine recommendations. As an appetizer, my husband had wild mushrooms flambeed in cognac and cream in puff pastry and I ordered the cassolette of snails in cream of tomato, basil, and garlic. I suspected these might be on the heavy side but they were quite the opposite -- the puff pastry was light and airy and the escargot sauce was just right. Although I ordered a rich entree as well -- a Duck Confit -- it was cooked to perfection with a crispy skin and meat that just fell off the bone. My husband ordered the Paillard de Poulet with lemon and lime, which was also excellent. Since everything was so delicious, (and, believe it or not -- we were not stuffed!) we did a rare thing and ordered a heavenly chocolate dessert. Overall, it was a lovely evening and we will make it a ritual in future!

“Brunch = Joke”
Reviewed October 22, 2005

Enter at your own risk. The brunch menu is a come-on and a ripaille-off. Want anything beyond the very, very basic omelette, be prepared to spend, big time.

Prices, compared to other neighborhood restaurants are grossly out of proportion - 3-5X as much. Somehow, an omelette here seems no work of art any more than at other neighborhood places.

Not ordering a special or grossly inflated deserts engenders a dissapointed look from your server - as if you did not meet his expectations.

It has an old, lived-in, look with dusty broken "antiques" - apparently there to convince you that the inflated prices are somehow prestigious.

You can do far better at other places within three blocks.

Not recommended.
