“disappointment again”
Reviewed December 15, 2011

I tried Fine & Schapiro again after a disappointing meal last year. And was again disappointed.

I was looking for a good deli sandwich in the upper west side and this restaurant came to mind -how can you screw up a sandwich if you use good ingredients! I got a combo sandwich, Pastrami, Corned Beef, and salami. It cost, with tax, $19. It was a good size and perfect to split with someone, but unfortunately the salami was so dry, and with brown edges was uneatable. The rye bread was so thin that it fell apart with the moisture of the tomatoes.

Very disappointed that this local place can't do a better job.

“A MUST STOP”
Reviewed November 19, 2011

My friend and I bought a groupon to this deli and were more than pleasantly surprised! The food was absolutely amazing and the owner was so accommodating and helpful. I had the corned beef and brisket sandwich. The meat was cooked to perfection and so tender. This is by far the best jewish deli I have ever eaten at. Food was fresh and well prepared. My friend said they had the best pickles! She was right!

This restaurant may not be the most upscale deli ever, but the food definitely worth a try.

“Classic kosher deli”
Reviewed November 11, 2011

Went here for a sandwich and some soup. The staff is very friendly and the food is good but it is quite expensive. I recommend this place for kosher deli style meals but only if you don't mind shelling out over $10 for a sandwich.

“When You Can 't Be With The One You Love, Love The One You're With”
Reviewed January 26, 2006

The problem is The Second Avenue Deli--the best kosher deli in the world--is closed, maybe for good. What's a kosher deli maven to do? In our case, it's to try out Fine and Schapiro, which has been serving dependable kosher deli fare since the 1920s. It's ain't the Second Avenue Deli, but it ain't chopped liver, either! The hot dog that we began with was perfect: taut and snappy as we bit in, pleasantly garlicky and meaty. The corned beef sandwich was way above average: better than the Second Avenue Deli on a bad night, not quite as good as The Second Avenue Deli when it was smoking. The pastrami sandwich was just awful: the meat was eviscerated, dry, stringy. The kasha varnishkes was left uneaten. The sour pickles were perfect, and the cole slaw was perfectly ordinary.

So...our kosher deli quest continues. Until we find something that replaces the Second Avenue Deli, or The Second Avenue Deli returns in a new location, Fine and Schapiro is an ok substitute. Just stick with the corned beef, and the hot dogs.
