I always drop by to have one of their famous pastrami sandwiches. Really big and reallly delicious. And... it never disappoints. Would like to say the same about the wait staff, but some of them must be worked too hard. The demeanor of some of them--not all--make you feel like they're always doing you a favor...to wait on you. A little disorganized at times also--even when it's not busy. But... I'll continue going back.

this as a stop for lunch organized by the travel group that we were with. it was great. prior to arriving the guide told that we were have a half sandwich, etc. half a sandwich is enough for two.
the dessert was great-cheesecake. you do have to take into consideration the era the building was built in regards to the bathrooms location and size. diffiniately on handicap accessable.

Do not leave New York if visiting without a stop at the Carnegie, come with an empty stomach as the portions are huge, one sandwich will feed three people...the prices seem high but if you share with others in your party it all works out. Sandwichs are as large as a dinner plate and stacked with meats n cheese 8inches high...and scrumptous! You will be so very full and want to turn down dessert...but don't the cheesecake is legendary...again huge, but unforgettable.
The staff have all worked there for decades and can move people through in record time.
The restaurant has been featured in movies and you will recognize the hundreds of publicity photos of the stars who have dined here. This deli is New York through n through.
Always busy, seating in close in the front dining room and parties are placed side by side, might seem a bit too close for comfort, but again ..pure New York. Perfect stop after the theater for coffee n dessert, close local to the theater district. Not to miss if visiting the city.

We ate at the Carnegie Deli because we had heard you had to eat there at least once. After reading previous reviews about the restaurant, I expected to be treated rudely by the staff. However, we had nothing but great service. We ate there three times during our NYC stay and every time we had good service.
We didn't intend to eat there three times, once would have been enough, but we went back because others in our group either hadn't been, or wanted to go back for a specific item, like Banana Cream Pie.
On our first trip we shared the Pastrami sandwich. The sandwiches are huge. There has to be a pound of meat on two small pieces of rye bread. That's it, just two slices of rye bread and a bunch of meat. No garnish, no sides, nothing, just bread and meat on a large plate. To eat the sandwich you have to remove half of the meat, add your mustard (if you don't want it dry) and then eat the rest of the meat with a fork if you are still hungry. The pastrami was very good and the sandwich while a bit plain, was very tasty. The second trip we had the Corned Beef sandwich. The corned beef was better than the pastrami, and served exactly the same way, just bread and meat. The third trip we had breakfast, corned beef hash. This was also a huge dish, so we split it as well. The dish was a bit dry and didn't have a lot of flavor. The eggs were overcooked as well. We left a lot on our plates. By the third trip we felt like we were ready to have heart attacks with all of the fatty meat we had eaten. But, it was good. Our son had to have a piece of Banana Cream Pie, so that's what he had for breakfast. The desserts are huge and the pie was very good.
The tables are very close together, so if you are looking for an intimate dining experience, you may enjoy sitting next to strangers and making friends.

The sandwiches here are huge. Easily can feed 3-4 people. The pastrami and the corned beef are both great. The woody Allen gives you both on one sandwich. The open face Ruben is also good. Get a potato pancakevascwell.
A great NY deli near Times Square.
